Boy cat peeing in washing up bowl!

New bad habit. Why?
Clean litter tray (I clean it as soon as used it or as soon as I am home)
Litter that he prefers
Cat flap so has access to outside.
Will pee in litter tray if I'm there and will poo in litter tray.
How can I stop it?
Using lots of sterilising fluid at the moment.

Never had a cat do this!

Sorry really unhelpful but my cat has started peeing in the pot of one of my best plants. I have no idea how to stop her Confused

Hope you find a solution Smile

Will he pee in the sink if you take the washing up bowl out?

YesItsMeIDontCare · 21/12/2018 11:54

You need a vet appointment. Most common cause of cats peeing in inappropriate places is UTIs.

SciFiScream · 21/12/2018 12:05

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit I'm going to test that.

YesItsMeIDontCare ok. Thanks. I'll get one sorted ASAP.

My DH is going daft!

@YesItsMeIDontCare

That's interesting. My cat does suffer from urinary infections and struvite crystals, which she is treated for.

I never knew peeing in odd places could be linked

Get a second litter tray but don’t put any litter in it - maybe he doesn’t like litter much. Put one of those absorbent mats outside it so his paws get ‘wiped’.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 21/12/2018 21:33

@BayandBlonde - they associate the litter tray with pain/discomfort while urinating so try going in different places.

Taking out the bowl is a good idea - I suppose it kind if looks like a litter tray to them. It might be worth using enzyme cleaner as well, to ensure the sink doesn't have any lingering pee smell that would encourage him.

Pp have covered most bases already, but things that cause ours to toilet in the wrong place include:
UTI
Things that look like litter trays
Litter tray not up to standard
Stress/dirty protest (not happy with new kitten)
Doesn't like litter tray surroundings (usually "something scary" like a draught or mop bucket nearby) Hmm

One time I decided to mop my kitchen floor with water and washing up liquid. Afterwards, my dog came in and promptly peed on the floor. It was super out of character for her so I wondered if there was some smell in the washing liquid that stimulated her to go. I've never used washing liquid on the floor again and my dog has never peed on the floor again.

Anyway, just a thought.

We've started turning the washing up bowl upside down and he hasn't used it since.

We've also been rewarding him lots when he uses the litter tray. So lots of praise, affection and a treat.

One day down with no pee in the wrong place. Fingers crossed it continues.
