New kitten hiding

We brought her home yesterday, she seemed quite chilled, hid a bit but came out and had a stroke, kept bolting back under the sofa. Popped her on the litter tray and she had a little wee but hasn’t touched her food. Popped on litter tray again this morning and she did big wee and poo. She’s been under the sofa most of the morning and still not eaten. Should I leave her or try and get her out? I’ve picked her up a couple of times and put her near her food but she’s just run off. She hates being picked up.

Leave her. It's quite normal. Sit quietly in the room with her and let her come to you and explore at her own pace.

Obviously once she's braver we need pictures 😁.

Oh bless her!

Can you put the food under the sofa? Very likely she'll come round in her own time, so it's just a matter of keeping her relaxed and happy as possible until she settles in.

She's a beauty - we have one very similar - she looks like she's wearing a mask.

We foster rescue kittens and have had a few that have spent the first few days under the sofa but have got to being full on lap cats in time.

Our two came from rescue foster care and hid behind the bread bin most of the first day, behind the sofa quite a bit the next two days. They were happy little hooligans by the 3rd/4th day and now completely rule the house. It’s pretty normal behaviour. Just keep bringing it out for food and sit it down next to you for a gentle stroke so that it knows you’re nice.

Can report that by Sunday evening she was out and darting around, yesterday when I got home she cried at me until I sat down and she curled up on my lap purring loudly. We’re super lucky she’s settling in great.
