Giving a cat medicine - help

My cat had dental surgery yesterday and has a weeks worth of 2 forms of medicine to be given orally. Both are in liquid form. We’ve tried mixing it in with her food but she was having none of it. This morning we did the whole pinning her down and syringing it into her mouth but it didn’t go well, lots of scratching and getting upset (both cat and owners). She’s quite an anxious cat and gets upset easily.

Please tell me your tips for administering cat medicine that’s pain free and easy for all involved!

Wrap them in a towel whilst holding her firmly and get the other person to hold open the mouth and squeeze the syringe.

Do you wrap just the claws in towel? I need a pic how to do it.

Like this, but tighter.

Wrap the whole cat in a towel and sort of jam them under your arm (as if you were playing bagpipes, lol) so just the head is showing.

You have to hold each leg rather tightly though, right? It's a 3 person job to get pills in our grumpy cat. 4 persons if any of the 3 is a child.

Don't forget the fifth person to go and Savlon from the pharmacy.
Gripping in a towel prevents body and leg movement.

I will just attach my instruction guide on this... Grin

Wait until she yawns then squirt it in

Beaverhausen · 05/12/2018 18:01

This might sound harsh but with my feral, I will be stroking him grab the scruff at the back of his head, his mouth then opens and drop meds down the back.

Just grab the scruff pull the head back and if you have a syringe make sure you squirt it into the corner of her mouth she will swallow it down. And then tell her what a good girl she was and stroke her. :) You know the corner of her lips like ours, just slip the syringe in and squirt the liquid in she will swallow it, she wont be able to move much if you have her by the scruff and it wont hurt.

Two person job.
Wrap cat very firmly in towel.
Turn cat and hold as if cuddling a baby.
2nd person stands behind. Prise cats mouth open put in tablet / squeeze liquid in back of throat.

Bamaluz · 05/12/2018 18:10

Have you tried mixing it with tuna or lik-e- lix which might mask the taste more than the usual food?

Toddlerteaplease · 05/12/2018 18:11

My late girl was on 4 tablets twice a day. I gave them to her with a pill popper. She was as good as gold though and no towels required!

BarryTrotter123 · 05/12/2018 18:21

It sounds like a towel burrito is the way to go - we’ll give it a try (if she ever surfaces again) and report back!

Second go was a little bit more successful. She still hates us but at least it’s getting done.

Just 6 days to go...Sad
