How much does your cat sleep?

We rehomed a cat in the spring and he's very old - 14y6m. I've noticed lately that he's sleeping all morning, most of the afternoon and doesn't seem to be going out at night either. Just checking if this is normal for this time of the year with it being cold outside and that he's not just getting too old to do anything?

Mine is definitely out less and sleeping more now it's colder
Have you got lots of soft comfy spots? I got a sheepskin Blush and his sleeping suddenly increased Hmm as apparently it was "better than anything else ever"

At the moment, easily 20 hours a day! They don't go out for more than 10 minutes a day in winter. They're 14 too.

Threewheeler1 · 29/11/2018 13:13

About 25 hours a day, by the looks of things!
Yesterday neither of them moved, except for the odd chicken-leg stretch, for over 8 hours. It was rainy and grim outside but they didn't even do the sleepy lollop to the food bowls when I filled them up.
This is normal for mine in winter though. I love seeing how relaxed they are, oblivious to hoovering, loud tv, DS2 and his trumpet practice, music and all the house noises.
Only go out the catflap for a few minutes, then straight back in.
They're 3 year old cuddly puddings Smile

My cat is 14/15 and she sleeps all the time. She has a cat flap and litter tray and rarely goes out. She's been like that for the past two years and she's fine. Cats love to sleep!

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 29/11/2018 13:17

My cat’s 7 and she happily sleeps 20 hours a day especially during the colder months. It’s a great inconvenience to her if she’s woken up to play too..

GreenandBlueButterfly · 29/11/2018 15:10

Mine is 10. She sleeps about 20 hours a day. In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that she gets hungry, I don't think she would ever wake up

Meet0nTheIedge · 29/11/2018 16:26

Mine too, they eat, go out for a couple of minutes, come in, sleep for several hours, maybe move to a different sleeping place at some point and repeat the cycle.

Knowivedonewrong · 29/11/2018 16:32

Our cat is 11 she sleeps all day and night. Only wakes to toilet and eat.

Kenworthington · 29/11/2018 16:38

Mines only 2 and he sleeps ALL the time, maybe around 20 hours a day if not more

whatswithtodaytoday · 29/11/2018 16:41

Mine are 10 and sleep most of the day and night in winter - I'd say 20 hours is about right.

Get up for breakfast with us, eat then straight back to bed.
Wake up around 4pm for a stretch, maybe poke their noses outside, start demanding food.
Realise we're not feeding them yet and settle down again.
Get fed around 7pm, then usually sit on the sofa judging us until we go to bed at 10ish.
Sleep all night.

Threewheeler1 · 29/11/2018 17:43

That's so true, exactly what mine do Grin

Vitalogy · 29/11/2018 17:55

Yeah, same, about 20 hours, not solid though, some of it's meditating, they're masters.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/11/2018 17:55

Sev is 3 now and sleeps aprox. 21 hours a day in winter, the other three hours are spend in eating, litter-traying, grooming, inspecting his territory and moving from one place to sleep to the other - there is an order!

We try to play with him but he looks bored and ignores us. We find his play things all over the place in the morning though, so he is doing something.

Meet0nTheIedge · 29/11/2018 19:57

Mine do a lot of snoozing, half awake, quick wash, move a bit, snooze, as well as many hours of solid sleep.

Childrenofthesun · 29/11/2018 20:00

Mine is only 2 and sleeps all the time at this time of year, except the odd 5 minute trip outside the house and 20 minutes racing around which always seems to coincide with when I've just gone to bed Angry.

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/11/2018 07:15

The average cat sleeps for 18 hours a day. Elderly cats in winter will spend most of the day snuggled up.

BonnesVacances · 30/11/2018 08:36

Thank you for the reassurance. Now I want to be a cat! Grin

Me too! Although I'd have to be Garfield the cat, as he can eat lasagne all the time. I couldn't stick regular cat food Envy

Doobydoobeedoo · 30/11/2018 10:29

Mine only goes outside to spray the bushes in the garden. The rest of the time he's either sleeping or eating.

Come to think of it, apart from the bush-spraying that also sounds uncannily like my teenagers at the weekends and during school holidays. Hmm

Oldraver · 01/12/2018 14:15

Ernie is three

He goes to his 'pillow' when I leave for work just before 10 and is still there when I gt home at 4/5 and sometime longer.

He then usually goes to bed anytime around 10/11pm and gets up with his Dad at 4am..
