Neutering

Hi, does neutering female cats always work? My female was done at 4 months. She is now just over one and seems to be putting on weight around her tummy. I will obviously take her to the vets to check but can’t do that today so was just hoping for some reassurance!!

Neutering means they need less food than before so it could be she is just getting fat.

BuntyBonus · 27/11/2018 13:58

I hope so. It just seems to be quite a sudden weight gain only noticeable over the last few days really.

The ovaries and uterus are removed in females so wouldn't be very likely to be pregnant

Vinorosso74 · 27/11/2018 15:46

I would assume that as the reproductive organs are removed that is unlikely. I reckon she's just putting on weight. Is there a chance someone else may be feeding her?

As others have said, if you know for sure she was spayed she won't get pregnant.

Has she been dewormed recently? A worm burden often causes a round belly.

You never know with cats I suppose, she does like to go out for a bit during the day so they could be. That’s good to know, I’ll start being a bit more vigilant with her food.

She could just be putting on her winter weight, mine always do/did during the colder months.

It can't not work, if it was actually done. It's probably normal weight gain - or possibly worms (or worst case FIP, but if she seems well I doubt it's that).

BuntyBonus · 27/11/2018 20:22

She was definitely done, I took her myself. She was last wormed at the vets 2 weeks ago. It must just be too much food. Thank you for the replies.

My girl is 20 months now and she's really packed on some extra weight lately as well as getting a thicker coat. I think they do every winter but last year she was still all gawky and kittenish so it wasn't as noticeable.
All my cats have been thinner in summer than winter
