Cat food

After reading a few posts in here I'm wondering about whether we use the right cat food. We use flex plus sometimes royal cabin or James wellbeloved .

Should we be using a higher protein food. If so, what varieties of (dry especially) are good nutritionally but also not too expensive? I have two cats of different ages (5 and 14/15).

Encore dry is 80% meat. I get it from asda but it only comes in a small bag (800g I think for £5.80). Thrive dry is 90% meat and I get it from Amazon. It has gone up in price so I think it's about £13 for 1.5kg. Zooplus has a good range of grain free high meat foods too or have a look in pets at home as they have a bigger range than the supermarket

I use Felix and James Wellbeloved. It’s not the best but mine would move out and raid the neighbours if I switched!!

Are they grain free too, Wolfiefan?

Harry has JW biscuits. Like Wolfie, mine would move out if I tried to change them!

I use a mixture of Royal Canin aromatic at Scrumbles as it's the only other food that Cheddar can tolerate and has massively settled her tummy.

Has your 14/15 year old had a senior blood and urine test recently to check kidney function? Might need a renal diet depending on results but many seniors have some degree of kidney disease.

I currently use Purizon dry for my adult cats and Sanabelle for my kittens, my eldest gets wet food renal diet only. All available from ZooPlus and grain free.

Mine (all youngish - 6,5 & 3) have Felix pouches & Royal Canin neutered young female. All have shiny coats & are average weight though 2 have gum issues. Non-toxic poo

The Felix is grain free & mostly “moisture”

The biscuits do have grain but much more protein & there’s a loooong list of mineral additives after chloride.

A lot of that protein is not animal protein though so you are paying a lot of money for corn, rice and wheat

They love them though (I’ve tried “better” biscuits & they don’t like them)

Mine may or may not have early CKD (he did have it, he got worse and was then back to normal). He wouldn't eat a renal diet so he has a phosphate binder in his normal food.

GiantKitten I let mine eat what he wants now (within reason) - I gave up the fight!

Cat doesn't have kidney issues as yet.

Mine have Felix AGAIL pouches and Applaws kitten dry. I've tried to change their wet food but they're not having any of it so I console myself with the fact that they're getting grain free decent dry food.

They do love Royal Canin but I'm not sure it's that high in protein. The easiest thing would be to leave them on it if it's ok.

I just thought that is there was something as good or preferably better for the same price or cheaper, I should switch.

I always use zooplus for ease, although I'm not loving the German version of the cat food tins 😄

Piriton is supposed to be good (zooplus). Mine ate the trial pack of it I bought. Has 70% meat/fish

2/3 of mine don't like Purizon. Will only eat after a long whinge trying for better.

I alternate between Natures Menu & Lily's kitchen to stop him getting bored.

He has Thrive dry occasionally but I prefer him on wet

Mine has aldi and is the happiest healthiest looking kitty in the world but now I feel guilty like he's getting crap food but I wouldn't know what's the best more reasonable without it costing a fortune ? He does get fancy gluten free biscuits though

I think I might try smaller packets of each and see how they go down.
