My cat has drunk rum

Help - I'm panicking!

I was soaking sultanas in dark rum (for a recipe) and went out into the garden. When I came back in he had jumped up onto the work surface, knocked the pan to the floor and was lapping up the rum.

Will the alcohol harm him? He hasn't vomited or anything (yet). He weighs about 4kg and there was about 100mls of rum in the pan.

Ring the vets.

Has he eaten any of the sultanas? I would call the vet.

I would suggest the vet as he might have eaten a sultana.

I only saw him lapping so not sure if he has eaten sultanas. Are sultanas poisonous to cats? Or do you mean because there's rum soaked into the sultana?

Definitely call the vets! Raisins and sultanas are toxic to cats. They will advise on what to do.

He still looks OK so perhaps I interrupted him just after he'd done it and he's had very little

Sultanas are massively poisonous. I'd be more worried about those.

Thanks every one! He is fine and came to no harm - vet thinks he had no sultanas and probably very little rum. But I learnt something from you all I didn't know about sultanas being toxic to cats!

That's great OP. I'm glad he's OK (and I hope it didn't cost you too much!).

As you didn't know about sultanas do you know about lilies? To be fair though I think the deadliness of lilies is more well known than the toxicity of sultanas, but sadly not well known enough.

Glad he's okay, but if he comes to you demanding diet coke or pineapple juice, move the rum bottle even further away.
