After months and months and months of not sleeping due to my cat waking me up all the time. I finally caved.

I blocked off the walk through between the living room and the back room. And shut the kitchen door.

He had access to the outside all night as he is very much a night cat and had the middle room with has a day bed in it and the kitchen so could still get to his food.

I slept for nine hours last night !!!! And feel like a different person this morning.
Mint boy did I have one pissed off cat when I came down this morning. Will he ever forgive me. Will he ever get used to it?

We are buying something this weekend to block it if permanently.

I’m a horrible person aren’t I

No. Your cat is the bad guy here Grin sleep thief!
My cat gets to sleep in our room a couple of nights a week. Although he has learnt to stop miaowing at me in the night and sleeping by my feet is preferable to across my neck.
But sometimes I just need a decent uninterrupted sleep, so shut him out. He's a reasonable boy though and doesn't scratch, cry or hold a grudge.

InProgress · 08/11/2018 09:02

No but you've started a war. I give you 2 more nights of blissful sleep before the cat wins. Grin

dontticklethetoad · 08/11/2018 09:04

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh boy. You're in trouble.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/11/2018 09:52

I was going to shut Cheddar out last night but as I'd been on a 12 hour shift she missed me, so I didn't have the heart. Mistake. I've not had a good nights sleep since I got her!

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 08/11/2018 16:28

Good I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’m off to ikea at the weekend to buy a book shelf to cover up the through room permantly.

He’s going to hate me.

I just tried shutting her out. But the door doesn't shut securely enough. She's purring on my knee....

Broken11Girl · 08/11/2018 23:59

You are mean and You Will Pay, OP Grin
Ah you lose, Toddlertea. Grin
Mademoiselle Matilda is actually very good and sleeps on top of the wardrobe Hmm when I sleep or occupies herself doing things I choose not to know about but Madam BrokenCat sleeps on the bed, how dare I need to move, and if I sleep after she deems I need to get up walks on me, 'accidentally' pulling my hair, then nuzzles me and purrs. Dick.

Singlenotsingle · 09/11/2018 00:08

My cats sleep downstairs but the dog is highly privileged and sleeps on the bed. Boy, can that dog snore (and she's only small).

Toddlerteaplease · 09/11/2018 06:32

Snorg is also a terrible snorer. But it's quite cute.

ArabellaUmbrella · 09/11/2018 07:23

They get used to it. Mine are shut downstairs overnight in our large lounge and kitchen with litter tray, water, several comfy chairs to snooze on, scratching posts... girl cat would scratch at the door and mew pitifully for the first few nights, after a couple of weeks she accepted it. I love my cats dearly but I need my sleep! She now waits at the lounge door every morning wanting her breakfast when I get up at 6am. (Boy cat isn't really bothered either wayGrin)

Orangelover · 09/11/2018 09:18

I have a similar problem and this week me and OH have done the same. OH works away quite a bit and I work nights so we don't often sleep together so normally it's just one of us and the cat which isn't too bad. However a week of annual leave has proven that two in a bed + cat is not cool.

So here lies next problem. Entire downstairs of house is open plan. The stairs lead straight to our room, where naughty cat knows we are. If it wasn't for this I'd keep him in kitchen, with a little light on with his food, tray and toys and snuggly bed. But I can't, there's just nowhere to block.

So we shut the door to our room. Naughty cat made a right mess of my carpet outside our room, which is new. He's never ever done that to the carpet either. After that every time I heard him claw it I leapt straight up so then he knew that doing that would get him what he wanted Blush

So i had to change tactic. Last two nights I've had the set up pictured. Heard a few meows first night but this morning didn't hear him until he wanted his breakfast at 8. Found him sat on his little cat chair, no carpet clawed.

I feel so smug Grin

My cat is very cross with me.
Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 09/11/2018 13:03

@orangelover that’s a good set up. Last night was okay. He wasn’t even here when I got up and had to call him for breakfast. But no howling. So I’m calling it a win and am looking forward to my road trip 2m to cover the gap

We always shut our cat in the kitchen at night ever since my DD woke up at 4am to a bleeding mouse breathing its last on the pillow next to her while he looked on proudly. He has his bed, water, the AGA for warmth and his catflap if he wants to go out and anything he's killed & brought in is at least confined to the tiled floor!

Toddlerteaplease · 09/11/2018 22:01

I have about them both out again and put the doorstep behind the door. I feel really guilty!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/11/2018 10:09

Well, cheddar made so much noise scratching at the door, I relented and let her in. Mistake!

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 10/11/2018 19:51

Noooooo

Broken11Girl · 14/11/2018 05:28

Madam BrokenCat emits the cutest little snores. The adorable tyrants.
Noooo you relented Toddlertea. Maybe she'd accept a cat bed in the bedroom? I just push my furry little miscreants away when they bug me in bed, my health matters which means getting sufficient sleep.

CSIblonde · 17/11/2018 15:40

You have my sympathy, I get woken at 4am for my girls start to the day. But she's otherwise perfect, even her really loud snoring is cute!

Orangelover
That little cat tree is so cute, I need a small one like that(small flat, no space). Where is it from if you don't mind me asking?
