Cat wee issue

I have 2 cats, both c. 10 (rescues so don’t know exactly).

Over the last few weeks one of them has started doing small wees occasionally in one corner on the carpet. It’s not every day but it’s getting more often. They’re just small wees but v stinky.

Don’t know which one it is so took both to the vet in case it was medical. Clean bill of health.

Bought new litter tray. Bought pet remedy plug in. Cleaned carpet. Ripped up underlay as had soaked through.

Tonight another small wee on the rolled back bit of carpet that I’m still drying.

Any ideas about what to do? I’ve never had this before and I don’t know which one it is or why they’re doing small wees there and most of their toilet outside.

I was going to suggest vet to check for infection but i see you have already done that.

Has anything changed in your house recently. ?

My neutered male.started spraying after a number of changes happened around the house. Had him at the vet, they suggested special diet, struvite stones etc. First time it happend, special diet seemed to clear it. Second time, not so much with our usual vet declaring the spraying was behavioural. I then sought advice from a herbalist vet - he is now on cbd oil every day. I too tried feliway plug ins sprays every internet advice know to man but CBD oil is the only thing that worked for my cat x

What did you clean with? You need to use biological washing powder and then dab with meths when finished

When they had a vet check did that include a urine sample?

Any new cats moved into territory? Potential bullies?
Litter tray too high or litter uncomfortable on paws? (I saw on a TV programme that older cats can have more sensitive paws. Could be nonsense?!)
Happening at a certain time of day?
Neutered or possibly a spraying male?
What are you feeding? Dried food can cause issues. They may not drink enough water so stinky wee.
Sorry for the random list!! If only we could see into the minds of cats eh?!

Have you changed the litter type?

So they have a tray each?

Another stupid idea. Do they get on? Could one cat (or a neighbour’s cat) be preventing use of a cat flap?

They do get on, they’re siblings and have always lived together.

There are several cats on our street but that has been the case for a while. I haven’t noticed any newbies. I switched to a magnetic cat flap though in case we have had any other furry visitors.

I cleaned with a carpet cleaned (vax type thing) will go over with biological cleaner.

It is a little patch rather than spraying. The cats are one male, one female in case that helps.

There wasn’t a urine test as cats were so healthy. She did prescribe metacam which we’re still using.

Litter tray is being used but only for the occasional wee as, until this, they didn’t have a litter tray so are still predominantly going outside.

They both seem to be strolling round outside as usual.

I’d love to just know which one it is! Could be more targeted then!

Definitely need a better cleaner. Bit shocked the vet didn’t suggest a UTI test. Only time our boy would pee where he shouldn’t.
Can you keep them in overnight but separate? Each with a litter tray? Perhaps might give you a clue?

Put Olbas Oil on that bit of the carpet. It probably smells of wee so that's why whichever cat it is will keep going back to it. We had the same problem and once we got rid of the smell she went back to using her tray - haven't had an issue since.

My living room is going to smell amazing meths and olbas oil seriously though, thanks for the advice. I’ll clean it again with biological and meths and olbas oil.

Dh and I have just been on our hands and knees sniffing the carpet arguing about whether it’s old or new wee. Then I noticed the curtains were still open. To a passer by we would have looked odd to say the least!

Not if your neighbours have cats.

Is it urine or spraying?

It could be territorial if it's spraying

If it's urine then any chance you can completely block off that area

Or maybe, you can put a litter box in that place

we had a friend to stay when we were sprinkling Olbas Oil all over the sofa. She thought we'd flipped. Still, preferable to the alternative smell!

I don't have any advice, just sympathy! My cat likes peeing in the corner of my bedroom and nothing has worked to get him to stop other can keeping the door closed / keeping a constant eye on him. Fabreeze did work to get rid of the smell (for human noses at least...)

Surgical spirit was the thing to use a few years ago to disguise the smell. Anything scented that doesn't break down enzymes will attract them back to that spot.

It's great you've taken them to the vet, but you really need to know which one is doing it. Listen out for any scratching in that area. If you can determine which one it is, most vets will start off by giving ABs and something like cystease/cystaid to line the bladder. Obviously they'll only provide treatment if they know which cat you're having problems with.

You'll know how fresh it is, if it's really wet then it's happened in the last few hours, anything damp and sticky is longer!

Do you know how often they both wee? If so, do keep an eye open for an increase in how often as that could indicate a medical issue is getting worse.

Like others have said, it could be stress related.

Please do not use Olbas or any other oil with either spearmint or peppermint - it is toxic to cats! Link

Hope you can help me . One of my cats started spraying because of a cat passing by our windows. I tried everything, now he is on ads.
But when the problem arose i searched the net so much and every link connected to the page you are linking.
Can you please tell me what it is? I gave up on it as it seemed quite dodgy, not telling anything unless you buy. What is the concept, is it just essential oils and eliminating stress factors.
I would really like to know, if we could use that instead.

Get Urine Off spray from Sainsburys, this is very good at getting rid of that horrible cat wee smell. Have you enough trays and do you clean them enough? Mine like a totally clean tray and wont go even if there is a wee in it.
