Need a handhold please

My beautiful 7 year old boy was breathing very quick and shallow this morning. Rushed him to the vets and they have kept him in for investigations following oxygen treatment.

The vet said he could hear fluid on his chest and seemed very concerned 😕

Feeling so worried as I have had him since he was only 5 weeks and he has seen me through a lot of hard times and truly is my little baby 😕

Have stupidly been on google and read all sorts of things and now I'm making myself more upset 😢

I hope it's something that can easily be treated.

If it's heart disease. It can be managed well on medication. Is he a posh cat or a moggie? Some breeds are more prone to heart disease than moggies.

He's a moggie, he's been diagnosed with hyperthorpic cardiomyopathy, in short heart disease.

The vet when I went back this evening to see him said if his oxygen stats and respiratory rate improves over night and the medication to reduce the fluid on his lungs helps his breathing we may be able to manage it with medication.

Which is fine as he's soft as anything and has never been any trouble taking tablets

I'm still a bit of a mess, can't help but worry I'm going to wake up to a phone call at some point in the night. :(

Both of mine had HCM. One just has it in a small area of her heart and is being scanned every 6 months. But she's fine. Her sister had it very badly. But was never unwell. In the end she took 4 tablets in the morning and 4 in the evening. And I as completely her usual self Her heart was improving but her kidneys packed up so she was PTS in August. If you are in the East Midlands/ Staffordshire way there is a brilliant cardiologist in derby. Please PM me if you want.

This must be a very worrying and scary time for you. But he is in the right place, getting the care he needs. As your boy is a sweetheart, it will help him a lot by making things less stressful for him. I hope he had a good night and is a bit better this morning.

It does make it much less stressful if they are good at taking tablets. I got a pill popper thing and got them all in there and. She had them in one go. She never ever deliberately spat them out.

Sorry for the lack of update it's been a rather hectic weekend.

He's doing better, his respiratory rate has improved and he seems to have cleared most if not all of the fluid from his lungs. They are starting his oral meds today and hopefully should have him home tonight or tomorrow, for how long who knows x

Glad he’s doing better

My cat lived for 9 months after diagnosis. And died because of kidney failure, not her heart. Her heart was so bad I can't believe she was so well with it. She was full of beans once she was on medication. Hers was genetic as she was a breeding queen from a kitten farm. She was 8. The worst thing about it was the not knowing how long I'd have her for. And being very tied to twice daily medication. Meaning I had to get a cat sitter in if I went away overnight. I'm proud to say that she only ever missed one dose of medication!

Glad to hear he will soon be home; hoping it's for a long time.

Glad he's improved and you can have him home. It gives you time to adjust.

Medication will soon become part of your routine.

He's home! Tablets twice a day, have to go back for bloods and urine sample Friday morning.

We are currently having lots of cuddles on the sofa. Hopefully can make what time he has left, whether that's short or long, a happy and peaceful one.
