Cat not using litter tray for first pee in morning

Can anyone help please?!
For the first morning pee my cat has stopped using the litter box!
He will now go in various corners of the house and I have tried several things to stop him but sick of cleaning up pee! (And the smell!)

I have blocked off two corners with furniture (always goes in a corner) and he's stopped- installed a feliway, cleaned with the cleaner that neutralises the smell and now he has started in the conservatory where we put new carpet in last weekend!!!

Any ideas that I can try? He's using the litter box for the rest of the day!

Have you taken him to the vet to rule out a UTI?

HardAsSnails · 07/10/2018 19:58

Try putting down another tray.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/10/2018 12:32

Do you usually scoop the tray first thing in the morning? Could it be that he feels it's too dirty before that? Maybe scoop again last thing at night do he thinks it's cleaner. It get an extra tray.

Maybe the urge to mark is territory is stronger first thing? Does he go out at all?

Pinkroseuk · 09/10/2018 21:11

He's only doing it every 4-5 days-
He goes out during evenings but not in the day as we're at work.

We scoop in the evening generally- will get another tray and try that too thanks

Could you put him out first thing pre breakfast?

Pinkroseuk · 09/10/2018 21:33

I could try to- he's peeing as soon as he hears our voices as I race down the stairs and sometimes catch him in the act!
He's so clever!

Our ddogs used to have the odd accident if the dc were up but hadn't opened the bloody door for them!!
Dh gets up early (earlier!) and chucks them out - while I lie in!!

First, you really need to rule out a medical condition especially with a male cat as they can get blocked. Urinating in unusual places can be a sign of upset, stress, but you needs to rule out infection, cystitis, crystals, bladder stones as he'll be in pain (even if he isn't showing it) TODAY. If there's something wrong internally it'll be causing irritation as well, thus making him want to urinate more and just wherever he can.

Mine was doing this recently. You haven't changed the litter have you? Mine is a little madam and because I was using a different brand she wouldn't use it in the morning (any other time was fine). I went back to the old litter and touch wood no problems.

Pinkroseuk · 10/10/2018 10:52

No no change to litter and toucheood nothing since Sunday- he's using the box when he needs to atm- not more regularly than usual or anything.
He has vet next week for annual booster anyway so will get him checked then.
I think he's just marking his territory possibly

Maybe he has seen a new cat in his neighbourhood and is desperately trying to mark his ownership??

Pinkroseuk · 10/10/2018 11:52

@Aprilislonggone I have seen a new tabby about and he was howling at something oh other side of fence last night so I think that's exactly what he's doing! Either that or trying to impress her somehow!
