Bloody cat gone walkabout AGAIN

About a 6 weeks ago cat (neutered, microchipped 18 month old boy) went missing for two weeks. First time he’d been gone more than 24 hours - he usually comes back when he’s hungry.
When he came back we think he’d been stuck somewhere - neighbours arrived home with suitcases and suddenly he reappeared having lost weight and covered in dust.

He’s been back home for 3 or so weeks, mega clingy and cuddly, DH was convinced he needed to be a house cat, I convinced him it wasn’t fair and he needs to be allowed out.

He’s now been gone for 48 hours. This morning I thought I heard meowing in the distance, Ive been out shaking the dreamiest and calling and no sign.

I’m sure he’s stuck somewhere again, but I’m worried, particularly as we are in an area with 3 very recent cat killer victims.

Any tips to help bring him home (again!) and if so, should he be a house cat?! I’ve looked into GPS collars but they don’t have great reviews and he won’t wear a collar anyway!

He's had his freedom and clearly loves the outdoors, so personally I don't think he could be an indoor cat now. I'd knock on neighbours doors either side, opposite and behind initially. If there's no sign of him tomorrow, then perhaps prepare posters asking people to check sheds/garages. The last couple of days have been nice, so they'll be more than average with their shed doors open while they get things sorted for the winter.
