Cat overdosed on treats

We've just been away for 3 days. Our regular cat sitter was booked and all good, however - en route to our destination he called to say didn't think he could make it because so unwell and was was very upset he was letting us down. Trust this person implicitly and completely understood. I could have easily returned and said so but he sorted out contingency of someone we also know and a cat person (him and wife have masses) so we were very grateful.

On our return, realised the substitute had been giving our cat a bowl of 'treats' (Dentabytes / Dreamies) twice a day instead of separate bowl of dried food. To clarify, we ask normal cat sitter to give half a pouch / carton of wet food twice a day and scoop of dried food in separate bowl twice a day. Cat food is high quality grain free stuff - also leave print out of instructions / pertinent info.

Sorry about long background but I am worried about any long term effects of cat chomping down on bowls of treats over three days - given that cat normally has very small handful (6 - 9 pieces) doled out last thing.

He's obviously had an upset stomach (evidence) but is drinking loads of water.

Am sure he'll be fine, once his tummy has settled down. I would t worry about it. Just leave of the treats for a while.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2018 10:22

Off!

He will live
He might not be interested in his healthy food now though 😂😂

Good lord not very sensible of the cat sitter! Am sure he'll be ok once it's all out his system.
If he doesn't perk up in a day or so I would take him to the vet otherwise just feed him his normal food.

MrsCatE · 24/09/2018 11:43

Thanks all. He was poorly last night but fine this morning (crosses fingers) just very clingy! No treats for a while! Think he'll be sick of them anyway!

Lucky it was only three days.
How stupid some people are. Hope you’ve told both the original pet sitter and the substitute and if he does need to go to the vets, get them to pay.

serbska · 24/09/2018 12:05

They must have been using a whole pack of dreamies a meal??

Slightly different to your situation but I once went away for a weekend and left my cat with my regular (excellent) cat sitter. Before I arrived home I got a message saying that my cat had knocked the tub of dreamies off the counter ( where I had always left them) and eaten the entire lot which had resulted in an obviously upset stomach ( she cleaned up the mess 🙀) . She was absolutely mortified about it but catface was absolutely fine and I learned the lesson not to leave the treats tub on the side - I think I underestimated how determined he could be and they are now always safely stashed in a cupboard. No long term damage was done and surprisingly this incident didn’t put him off them, if anything it made him even more keen, daft cat!
Hope your cat is feeling better soon.

We ha e go,out ours in a glass container now so the cat can't knock the bloody thing off the side. Might be a struggle getting her to accept normal, food now. There. Gourged on their own version of crack ! What do they put in them that makes them sooooo irresistible?

ArtemisWeatherwax · 24/09/2018 14:37

He then sleeps and shits it off until the next time Living the dream(ies), heh?

It will be like giving your child 3 bags of the big size Haribos a day for a few days ! They probably think they'd gone to heaven for the first day and binged ate and thought they'd struck good but I'm sure the novelty wore off and they were pleased to see you to get back to normality !
