The cat REALLY stinks

She smells. She’s 19. Got this weird eye thing which is affecting her vision but otherwise fine. But she reeks to the point the house is smelling and I can’t bear her near me. I’ve used Johnson’s dry shampoo, wipes but every day by evening she stinks again and they aren’t really working
Any ideas?

What kind of smell is it? Maybe she needs a check up.

HoleyCoMoley · 20/09/2018 20:54

Infection somewhere, sores, mouth or teeth problems, is her eye the problem, poor cat she needs to see the vet, whatever it is is not her fault.

Polkapjs · 20/09/2018 21:02

Sorry I should have said she’s just been to the vets about her eye a week ago and has been smelling for a lot longer than that. Vet says all well aside from bad teeth which she says she can’t treat as she wouldn’t want her to go under an anaesthetic 😢. She’s purring when I wipe her. Just wondered if anyone had found a wonder product. Maybe she’s rolling in something as also still going outside. Maybe it’s breath. Can you get anything for that? Poor love.

Sorry I should also say eye is clean and not weeping and I’ve checked her for wounds or sores and nothing.

Oh bless we had a male cat like that when he got a bit older, it was like he literally decomposed from the inside out. (He didn't we had him thoroughly checked) his teeth were good and his stomach was good and he was too lazy to venture out much ever. We never did get to the bottom of it but he was renamed Stinky (which he answered to happily) and lived happily and healthily for a couple more years (sorry probably not helpful)

Cheddar smelled awful when I got her from the rescue. I used pet heads dry shampoo. She smelled of strawberry lemonade! I've got a whole bottle left that I won't use again if you want me to send it to you. PM me your address.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/09/2018 21:28

Have her kidneys been checked? Fatty smelt awful in the few days before she died.

Beccatheboo · 20/09/2018 21:33

My guess is the bad teeth. My old lady (20) was stinking until she had her teeth sorted. She had bad gum disease so she was transferring her stinky mouth germs to her fur while cleaning. (Do you notice dark brown stains around the cat bowl and on her fur when cleaning? If so, it’s probably blood from her teeth.) Mu mog had a couple of teeth out and a good clean. She’s quite a tough old bird so the vet thought she’d be ok with the anaesthetic (which she was). Due to urine infections she only eats wet food but I give her Whiskas Temptations to give her teeth a bit of a rub. The gum disease is creeping back but slowly (touch wood!).

Toddler that would be fab ta. Can I PM from the app? I think it’s teeth reading all your messages as she’s so sprightly

My old boy absolutely reeked for his last six months or so - so much that we eventually had to keep him downstairs at night rather than him sleeping on my pillow because the smell would wake me up. Sadly just a combination of everything failing I think. He was 19/20 so we forgave it!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/09/2018 00:44

I don't think you can pm from the app. It has to be the main site. I think. I was just wondering what to do with it yesterday!

Polkapjs · 23/09/2018 14:07

I’ve tried to send one toddler. Let me know if you get it ta! Cat still reeks even after daily wiping and dry shampoo - it’s truly awful

Got it. Hopefully some strawberry lemonade will lake him smell better!

Posted today Op. hope it helps. At least it won't be wasted as Cheddar won't need it again.

Our 19yo cat stinks too. For her it seems to be lack of personal hygiene. She just poos and wees where she wants now and then will walk through it without caring. The room she sleeps in absolutely reeks and despite regular cleaning of her feet and fur (which she hates) she still leaves a smell when she walks past. Quite difficult to manage her uncleanliness with a 10mo baby Confused but of course she is part of the family and we love her!
