lost our cat this morning

The postman just called to tell us one of our two cats was in the road this morning. He's been run over and has obviously been dead a while, so it probably happened during the night.

I showed the body to the other one (litter mates, completely devoted, sleep wrapped around each other) as I'm sure I read that's what you're supposed to do. She freaked out completely and now I can't find her.

They're my son's cats and he loves them. First day back at school for him and it's his birthday tomorrow (9).

I don't know what to do. I don't even know what to do with the body.

Aww I'm sorry :(

You've done the right thing letting little cat see the body, do you have a garden to bury him in?

Vinorosso74 · 06/09/2018 13:02

I'm sorry. What an awful shock. I feel so bad for your son too. You could have a little burial in the garden? I think you need to dig pretty deep though.
Your vets can arrange a cremation either communal or individual and you can get the ashes back.

forbiddenfruitcrumble · 06/09/2018 13:03

Yes, we've buried him in the garden. They were inseparable though, all day cuddling and playing. She hasn't come back yet. Is this normal?

So sorry OP, this is an awful thing to happen. It might help your son to have a few words by the grave, plan something to mark the area.

With regards to your other cat, she may have gone off to grieve and hopefully will return soon.

winegal · 06/09/2018 16:15

I'm so so sorry. Our cat got killed by a car back in May and it was devastating.

Thanks OP

recklessruby · 06/09/2018 18:23

So sorry OP I lost my Rubycat nearly a year ago in the same way
I m still very sad.
It's okay for you and your little boy to have a cry. Maybe buy something nice for the grave?
I have a sleeping tabby statue and a riot of red flowers (for our names).

LanguidLobster · 06/09/2018 18:46

Is girlcat back now? You're all grieving together, really.

She may be a cat but she does know he's gone and it'll take time for her to settle. Hope your son is ok

forbiddenfruitcrumble · 07/09/2018 09:56

Thanks very much for all your kindness and winegal and ruby sorry your cats suffered the same fate.
Littlecat is back and positively chipper. DS made me close the cat flap so she can't go out at night but actually she is not the adventurous one. DS was in heaving sobs for hours last night which was tough but he seemed a bit better this morning just a bit subdued.

So very sorry Flowers We lost our dear cat in the same way just over a month ago and it's no exaggeration to say I was heartbroken. I was crying thinking about her this morning and miss her so much. It's very sad to hear that your other cat is distressed. We've never had more than one cat so don't know what to suggest. I would warn you that cats being run over is vey common, much more common than I realised before it happened to ours, and personally if we have another cat I'll be making sure they are confined to the garden with an enclosure so can't get anywhere near the road. It's not worth the risk and still gives the cat outside space to play and get fresh air.

MrsCatE · 08/09/2018 01:19

I'm so sorry for you and your family. Thankfully, the sibling has returned Flowers x

Want2beme · 08/09/2018 10:02

So sad. Sorry for your loss Flowers

forbiddenfruitcrumble · 08/09/2018 17:14

yesshecan i'm so sorry about your cat. It's heartbreaking. I hadn't realised how many cats get run over. Our road is currently a diversion which has meant a lot of cars when usually it's quiet. Even so, our neighbours who have lived here for a long time told me they lost 'loads' of cats in this way.

Girlcat seems fine, more affectionate than usual perhaps.

I'm hoping we've done the right thing but we got a new kitten today (we're picking him up in a week's time). He's a ragdoll and will be an indoor cat.

Thanks again to everyone for your kindness.

I lost my big furry boy Xander in June to the road 😭 that phone call from the vets was horrendous and the worst thing was that the vets said it was best I didn't see him as his head was a mess 😭 I had him cremated and he is in a little wooden box on my fireplace 😍

My little angel was killed by a car yesterday. Am heartbroken, feel awful. Also worried about my other cat. I let her see the body and she was licking to clean her, sniffing her nose. I hope she has realised what's happened. I don't think my heart could stand to see her crying and looking for her little friend.
