Kitten with upset tummy

I brought home a gorgeous 4 month old cat with his mum at the weekend from CHAT - they advised that they preferred dry food, and that he was already eating adult food as they have been in together.

Since coming home I've had them on Iams adult food. I'd also been feeding him a bit of cooked chicken - rescue suggested it as a way to build some positive associations. Mum cat is very nervous and I think he's probably been whipping in and getting her chicken too! He will wolf anything down!

She does lovely solid well buried poos - his are gross runny messes!! Always in the litter tray at least but not pleasant!

I've not given them anything but the Iams biscuits since yesterday lunchtime to see if the chicken was just too exciting for his tummy - and google tells me it might just be him adjusting - but how long should I give it on the Iams before I try something else? Google also scared me with dehydration talk but he does seem to be drinking plenty.

TIA!

Probably just the change in food. Make sure lots of water available and see him in the morning. If no improvement see the vet. Our girl had bit of tummy upset at first but was ok after 48 hours. Our vet said new food and situation.

Sometimes a rescue kitten will be worried that more food won't be forthcoming. Hence the gulping which leads to distressed digestion. Once your kitten understands food will keep arriving this problem will most likely go away. One thing to consider is trying a little jar of baby food, maybe pureed chicken or turkey, as it will give kitten food and moisture. Or canned soft food for kittens during this time of adjustment.
Hope this helps.

Check the iams food for wheat/grains as some cats can't tolerate them. Maybe try grain free dry food. The vet gave me a paste once when one of my cats had a runny tummy...pro kolin I think it was called

While my kitten seems to prefer dry food, she also enjoys wet. I notice a slight runny tummy when she gets too many treats - I spoil her too much! I also recently introduced applaws tuna which caused a bit of a tummy upset.

I would keep on the iams for a few more days, if it doesn’t improve maybe try a kitten dry food. I use Lily’s kitchen which hasn’t caused any problems.
