Tips for encouraging DCat to poo outside

DCat is the apple of my eye, but she makes the most God-awful smells.

My DParents’ cats used to do their business outside, with their litter tray for rainy days only.

Is there anything i can do to train her to go outside instead?

Here’s a picture of DCat, for no reason other that I can...

Well it's a risky one but just take the litter tray away...? We did and our cat rarely uses it now (we put it out during rainy/snowy days).

Ours just naturally started doing it outside without our input. Still have the litter tray for overnight/bad weather

Enidblyton1 · 24/08/2018 20:17

I removed the litter tray completely so our cat has no other option. I don’t think she would have ever been persuaded to go outside if I had kept the option of an indoor loo!

I tried moving the litter tray into the garden, as a transitionary measure. She just peed in the place it used to be.

Thank you for your answers so far.

I might try putting it right next to the outside side of the cat flap.

Is there a place you want her to do it? Maybe put some of the litter in that spot to show her where she should go

dementedpixie · 24/08/2018 20:22

My 2 voluntarily do their business outside with only the odd pee in the litter overnight. I wouldn't take ours away completely as I keep my 2 in at night

Cheripie64 · 24/08/2018 20:34

I was very lucky with my two 8 month rescue brothers, kept them in for 4 weeks and just let them out, not used the ĺitter tray since, I just put some used litter outside.
Your cat is beautiful.

Ha! Mine goes out to play and comes in to use his litter tray.

Following.

Impulsesealer · 24/08/2018 20:36

Where do you want her to do it? Isn’t it more fuss to have to go out picking up poos in the garden than just having it in the house?

If smell is a problem would you consider feeding raw? There is literally no smell.

dementedpixie · 24/08/2018 20:38

If the poo smells that bad maybe you need to change the type of litter or the food you are giving her

viccat · 24/08/2018 21:18

Removing a litter tray is cruel. Would you like to go and do your business in the garden when it's cold, rainy or someone (ie. another cat) is standing on the fence watching? Not to mention awful overnight, as letting cats out in the dark is risky anyway (most RTAs happen in the dark).

You could create areas outside that are more tempting. My young girl seems to like the raised bed that has wood bark chip on top...

threestars · 26/08/2018 11:13

You can get a plastic dog kennel and put the litter tray inside it, keeping it just by the back door.

AllAtHome · 27/08/2018 08:44

You can get outdoor litter trays. Mine now chooses to poo outside in that and I clean it out as soon as I realise there’s a poo. She still has a tray indoors and she sees in that and poos in it occasionally (normally if she can’t access the outside one for some reason).

The alternative is surely to be wanting her to poo in your garden (disgusting) or your neighbour's gardeng (Appalling)

MeetOnTheLedge · 27/08/2018 08:50

Make a freshly dug patch of soil in the garden and see if they'll use that. Mine do (its supposed to be a veg patch) despite having indoor trays. However it attracts neighbourhood cats too so I end up with even more shit to deal with and the garden smells bad, I'd rather they just used their trays to be honest.

Also think of your neighbours, unless you live in the middle of nowhere, its awful having other people's cat shit in your garden.
