Cat and sofa

Our cat, who has access to vertical and horizontal scratching posts, prefers to use our furniture because he is contrary, untrainable, furry little bastard.

Our sofa desperately needs replacing, it has got past the 'covering with a throw' stage but reluctant to do so because of predicted cat damage.

Any advice to prevent this, or type of sofa to get? The sofa we will be getting will be fabric; vegetarian so don't want leather, and don't like plether..

Ah, I was going to say leather.

We have cord sofa covers from IKEA and they don't get shredded. The other thing mine love to scratch is a normal doormat from IKEA. We have it front of the french doors and all claw stropping is done there.

I was also going to say leather. My two shredded an ikea ektorp bit have never touched my leather one.

Ah, the Ikea one was top of my list...

We actually have a wicker conservatory suite. The wicker element is cat proof (ish) and the square cushions can be easily recovered.

I'd suggest second hand..
Loads of charity places have a furniture shop or section. Get a used one, money goes to good cause and it's less than £100 for the cat to ruin.

You have cat, you have boss, you live to their whims.

At least if you get an Ektorp the covers are replaceable and washable.

I got a velvet sofa - apparently they're not as keen to scratch velvet as the pile is too short; it's not at all scratched so far but does seem to attract all the cat hair in the house so needs vacuuming every day!
