Process for adopting from RSPCA

We lost our remaining elderly cat earlier this year and decided to get some new kittens now so they can settle in over the school holidays. We found a gorgeous brother and sister at an RSPCA shelter but it is about an hour away from us. When I enquiried they asked me to fill in a questionnaire and send photos of our garden as they said it was too far for a home visit. They said they were happy with the pictures and have invited us to meet the kittens tomorrow. But I’m not really sure what happens next. Should I expect to bring them home tomorrow? Will they need to do anymore checks? I’m taking DS (12 and 14) with me but DH will be at work so will they need to meet him too? Any experiences gratefully received!

We adopted from RSPCA in November. They asked all members of family to come to meet him but as our son has ASD they were happy for him not to come once they understood we had 3 other cats (they worry about allergies apparently). We filled in a form and could have taken him then but they had forgotten to neuter him!! No home visit until we had had him 4 months. Much better experience than Cats Protection, would not go there again. We currently have 1 cat from Battersea (had 15 years) that was a very good experience, 2 cats via private sale but felt like a rescue and our RSPCA boy.

We were asked a few questions over the phone and went to see a cat who was with a fosterer but I got the impression we could have taken her there and then as they're so overwhelmed with kittens.

I was expecting a home visit but we've had one recently with another cat charity so perhaps that's why they haven't asked for one. I'm so excited as we're actually bringing her home later today!

Thanks both, that’s helpful. I’ll put the cat carrier in the car just in case! We already have plenty of cat paraphernalia so we could bring them home straight away.

If you've passed a home check you'll be able to take your cats. I had someone come and view the house (garden mainly) ask a few questions and that was that. I went and collected the cats from the foster carer a few days later.
Enjoy them!

I've had no trouble from the rspca. Filled the form, home visit, job done.

Update! We went to the shelter today. The two we had in mind were very very timid, and though they were gorgeous, we didn’t feel they were the cats for us. But we saw a brother and two sisters who absolutely fit the bill and they let us take them home straight away! So we now have Jon Snow, Ruby and Luna bombing around like lunatics! I had forgotten how mad kittens are!

We picked our girl (name Tbc) up this afternoon and she's gorgeous! She's hidden for a bit but since come out and sat on laps purring away like nobody's business.

Ahhh SmoothSailing I'd seen those three on the website last week when I was having a premature browse at kittens locally and thought how lovely they are!!! What a coincidence!

6DinnerSid, how funny! We are actually not that close to that shelter, but they seemed to have the loveliest selection of kittens! They did say they had kittens waiting to come in, and they also had a newborn litter there as well, so keep looking!

We're moving house in a couple of weeks so won't be ready until September, but from what I'm hearing everyone is still expecting to be overrun then as well.

Your new arrivals look gorgeous and well done on getting more than one - I think kittens are far happier when homed with siblings. I love the mad kitten phase btw .
