Aibu to catnap a cat

I don’t know who’s he is or whether he’s a stray, he’s a long haired cat and very skinny and flea ridden, his fur is very matted, & today when he raced over to greet me I brushed the bigger knots out of his fur, that’s how I know he has fleas.

Would I be unreasonable to take him to the nearest vets to check if he is chipped and just lost. And if he has no chip keep him?

I hate seeing him wondering around the neighbourhood racing to us wanting to be fussed, I’m worried he is alone.

He could of course have a family and just be playing the neighbourhood for fuss. But I am worried about him as he was wandering around at 11pm and more so because he has fleas.

Good idea to get him scanned at the vets.
Maybe post a note through the neighbours doors or post on a local Facebook group see if anyone is missing him.
If no-one comes forward, it looks like you're his new humans :)

HolidayHelper · 21/07/2018 23:38

Of course you wouldn't be unreasonable to take him to the vet to be scanned/flea treated. You would be very unreasonable to just decide to keep him if he doesn't have a microchip though! You need to do what you can to trace his owners first. Put up posters in the area/search lost pet facebook groups/notify the RSPCA/check the paper for lost cat adverts etc. Of course if you don't get anywhere then it's great you're willing to take him on board.

fuzzywuzzy · 21/07/2018 23:38

DP did ask around our immediate neighbours nobody knows who he belongs to.

He seems to have taken a shine to us. Maybe we are just very clearly biddable.

I think I’ll take him to the vets on Monday.

Good idea about posters.

How would I search on Facebook, on the selling bit?

The lack of care does indicate he may be a stray. But he may be lost rather than abandoned.

Also, patrolling at 11pm or 11am or anytime indicates nothing imo as a life long cat staffer. They walk when and where they want. But yes to vet.

Want2beme · 22/07/2018 00:43

Yes, do take him to the vet. He must be really hungry and so uncomfortable with the flea infestation. Do you know where he sleeps?

MrsCatE · 22/07/2018 03:30

Absolutely take him. Sweetie, your Username is really not acceptable. I'm giving you the benifit of doubt but, really??

ImAGoofyGoober · 22/07/2018 07:30

What am I missing? I can’t see anything wrong with a username.

Op I would definitely take him to check. I would put pics up on local Facebook pages asking who’s cat he is.
I would also keep putting food down and giving him a fuss.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/07/2018 07:37

I think mrscat is referring to fuzzywuzzy being what a tribe in Africa was called-they were at war with the colonial British. Or it could be-
Fuzzywuzzy was a bear
Fuzzywuzzy had no hair
Fuzzywuzzy wasn't very fuzzy
Was he?

TroysMammy · 22/07/2018 07:39

MrsCatE Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Look it up.

ImAGoofyGoober · 22/07/2018 07:44

Wow I had no idea!

cricketmum84 · 22/07/2018 07:55

Try a paper collar - fasten with sellotape and put a note on asking owners to contact you as he is behaving like a stray. If no contact then I vote keep him :) he sounds like he has already decided to keep you and once a cat chooses an owner then there's not much you can do... Grin

fuzzywuzzy · 22/07/2018 07:56

@Want2beme I’ve seen him sleeping under a van outside opposite our house. He seems to be there mostly.

MrsCatE follows MeV round changing names and posting that poem up. I had to google to work it out. She’s been trying to hound me off MN for a while.

Right so consensus is take him to vets and go from there.

I’m just really worried as he has fleas, combined with the matter fur and being very skinny it is worrying me.

MrsCatE · 22/07/2018 08:22

Honest OP I'm not that person who's hounding you Shock and heartily commend you for trying your best for a stray. OhWhatFuckery knows that I'm not horrible. I didn't post poem, but explains a lot; like why Fuzzy bear off the muppets was called so - I didn't know! I was taking the inference off Dad's army Corporal 'Don't panic' Jones! Back to the important stuff; best of luck with the poorly cat x

Dogstar78 · 22/07/2018 08:34

We had a similar situation. If you go on the Cats Protect League website they have little paper collars to print out which asks the owners to get in touch.

fuzzywuzzy · 22/07/2018 08:36

@Dogstar78 thank you I’ll do that ASAP.

OP posts:
TroysMammy · 22/07/2018 09:08

It's Fozzie Bear off The Muppets, Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear in his own right.

LanguidLobster · 22/07/2018 11:38

MrsCatE is a nice person, think there was some misunderstanding.

Hope paper collar goes well OP, poor little thing!

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/07/2018 14:27

He sounds either lost or abandoned. You can buy advantage from the chemists for him. It's safe to use.

Poor sods being sucked dry of what nutrients he has.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/07/2018 14:29

Could you feed him too? aldi food is very cheap and he must be in pain from hunger.

EachandEveryone · 22/07/2018 16:48

Yes feed him and see what the vet says. Sounds like a stray. Abit Like mine Blush

Want2beme · 22/07/2018 17:23

Each, is he visiting or has he decided that you are the chosen oneGrin? Apologies if he's a regular here, I have an appalling memory!

Any update OP? Can we see him?

MrMeSeeks · 22/07/2018 19:03

Please do take him to the vet!
He may be lost, the owner may be going out of their minds.

thecatneuterer · 22/07/2018 19:31

Personally I wouldn't bother with the paper collar. If he does have 'owners' who he still goes to then they obviously aren't looking after him. If he does have owners but is lost, then the collar won't help.

Just feed him, take him to the vets, get him scanned just in case, and then take it from there.

EachandEveryone · 22/07/2018 20:05

Want2 i have no idea. Hes young and skinny but very confident. I think he is a stray they are so many where i live. He was shy now he marches in and uses all the girls toys. They just sit there gobsmacked. Im just in awe that he plays with all their toys and he enjoys them all. Hes totally opposite to my girls. He completes all their puzzles, goes in and out of their tunnels and scratches every post. I feel like my moneys not been wasted. Hes lovely and has gigantic feet with many toes on each. He is lovely i am not in love
