Older cat and changed behaviour

We have a tabby cat who is nearly 11 years old, he has been very healthy apart from last year when he attacked by a fox or dog that left him with a huge abscess on his leg but was treated successfully.
But for the last 3 weeks his behaviour has changed, he rarely leaves the garden, choosing to sit in one area for hours at a time, he is jumpy and nervous and is far more vocal, he also seems to sit and stare at nothing for several minutes at a time.
He is eating a bit less, drinking normally though.
Is this normal aging? My teenage dd will be distraught when he dies and she is worried about him.

My cat is 18. She's just like yours and seems to get louder every year! Does nothing all day and stares at spots on the wall. Daft old thing. I did wonder if the increase in vocalising was age.
