Why has this cat adopted us?

I have a cat on my lap. Cat has been prowling for weeks. We neither encourage or discourage it, ie we don't don't feed it but we don't kick it out or yell at it either (except the other day when I found it eating my pate on the worktop).

Cat is well fed and loved; she lives three doors down. Why has she decided she'd like to spend time here? The only reason we can come up with is that her owners have recently waved an intermittent goodbye to two DDs the same ages as mine. I've got one DD at uni, one has just graduated but they're both at home for some time. Is this enough of a reason for the cat to decide to honour us with her presence?

This cat obviously likes you. Not even food related.
You are honoured.

Next door's cat used to come in our house sometimes when I lived at home.
Once we found her under the bed in one of the bedrooms.
I think they go wherever is comfy and quiet...

The fact that she's comfortably sitting on your lap probably explains it! Maybe the departed DDs were her main warm laps before. Also your house is now The House of Pâté.

Humph. Cat is called Patty apparently Grin. But my house is primarily The House of Red Wine and I'm buggered if she's having any of that!

And where are the circumflex and acute accents on my keyboard?!

My cats have several homes they visit in my road. They love children so typically visit houses where there are access to children who will dress them up, put them in a pram and push them up and down the roadConfused

Princess ROFL - at 21 and 19 my DDs have, I think, finally outgrown dressing up and prams.... Grin Grin

I've been adopted by the cat across the green, he comes in makes himself at home , likes a good cuddle and adores laying on top of my bin 😂, he's not even bothered by the 3+5year olds I have he seems to nod at them and walk past !!

We have one of these.
We've known her since she was a kitten used to watch us garden.
Then she sneaked into our house when the door was left open.
Now she scratches at our door to come in.
There is no food... and if she tries to eat something then she gets shoved off.

I think she prefers our taste in TV.
