Cat locked outside

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first ever post. I'm hoping for some reassurance....
This morning my 16 year old cat went out, and didn't come back before my partner or I left for work, despite us going out looking for him and calling his name. We had to leave for work, meaning that the cat is now locked outside until one of us gets home, which will be at least 4pm.
This worries me as we've only been in our new house for a few weeks, the cat has only been going out in the new area for a week and usually he prefers to stay indoors and sleep all day - he'll occasionally go outside for a few hours, but spends most of his time indoors by choice.
Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing (I am a worrier), but I keep imagining the worst case scenarios (what if he thinks we've moved again or left him, and goes elsewhere and doesn't bother coming back? Or spends all day crying on the doorstep?)
He is my first cat and a rescue - what do you experiened cat owners think of this?

I guess if you have just moved there might be no-one you know in the area who could call round?

How long was cat kept in for after he moved/did he seem to have acclimatised? Any food for him outside?

There's not much you can do about it right at the moment and it will most probably be fine, don't fret too much right now.

Thank you for your response :-). I don't know anyone in the area yet that I could get in touch with unfortunately. He was kept inside for 4 weeks before I let him out, and he's been out almost every day since then (a week ago) and has found his way back fine - although he doesn't like to stay out for long. No food outside for him unfortunately, as I wasn't expecting him to be outside for very long.
I'm trying not to fret; hopefully he'll just be sunbathing somewhere close by!

He should have a good idea of where he lives now. He'll probably be waiting for you to appear and will give you what for when you get homeGrin. Let us know.

This is why all cats who go out should have a cat flap - it's like a key to the home.

Hopefully he will just find a nice place to relax in today, given the weather, and will be ok.

You were right Want2beme - he is thankfully now home safe and sound after waiting for us all these hours, but is definitely feeling sorry for himself! Thanks for your response :-)

Viccat we are hoping to buy soon and will definitely invest in a cat flap, but for the the being we are renting and unable to install one. Thankfully he is now home and seems fine
