Do cats like having a companion?

We got a stray kitten almost a year ago. We got her when she was really tiny (six - eight weeks old) and she's always lived as an only cat.

We moved into a new house a few months ago and the house came with three cats who live outside. Our little one has recently started to want to go outside so I've been letting her out at weekends and in the evening after work (we don't have a cat flap so she has to be either in or out for the day). She seems friendly enough with the other cats although they do hiss at each other sometimes.

Anyway she's a very playful little kitten but the other cats are a lot older (about 8 years old) and long past the playful kitten stage. I like the idea of getting another kitten to be a friend/playmate for our house cat but worry that she'd hate it! Anyone got any experience of introducing a new cat into a previously single cat household?

Me and DH are planning on starting a family soon and I feel bad thinking of our cat having less playtime and having to sleep by herself because the baby is in her space in the bed!

Some cats like the company of other cats and some don't. The problem is, you won't know how your cat will be until you bring another one into the house. Do you care for the cats outside? Do they need to be found homes? Can your cat continue to befriend them?
