How to stop kitten using plant as litter box

Just that really. She has two easily accessible and clean trays but nothing gives her greater joy than using my giant plant pot for her toilet. I've tried adding lemon wedges into the soul, net result was some mouldy, muddy faeces covered lemon.

Tinfoil didn't deter her, she stomped all over the cling film. I am out of ideas and worried my plant is going to die.

Big pebbles to cover soil?

MRSMARMITE3 · 16/06/2018 22:55

My cat keeps pooing in my planters outside ( killing a lot of the beans growing) I've had partial success with bamboo sticks stuck in the soil so no room for him? I've heard People do this with plastic forks (though obviously it looks stupid) . Apparently cats don't like the smell of orange peel

I've got a big rosemary bush, I cut twigs of that and cover the bare soil with them, it does the job without looking unsightly or going mouldy.

Could you put some earth in her litter tray, perhaps that is what she is used to.

Large pebbles covering the soil should Do it.

Thank you. I think I will try the pebbles first. All great suggestions!

With my 10 month old rescue, I put a grid of tape (sticky side down, 2cm ish gaps) on my big pots - think this worked as she couldn't settle into position so pots became an uncomfortable option.

Could you replant the plant into a litter tray and give her the pot??????

(A not entirely sensible suggestion!)

Sunshine49 · 19/06/2018 11:40

Weezol, that sounds like a good solution!

OP - my cats used to enjoy digging all the soil out of my houseplant pots and showering it all over the floor! In the end I covered the soil in pebbles and haven't had a problem since - although they do enjoy fishing the occasional pebble out of the pot and chasing it round the conservatory!
