Would you put your cat through major surgery

if the vet said there's 50/50 chance of making it?

this is spinal injury I am talking about, broken in 2 places after being run over by a car.

I wouldn't because even if the cat survived, there are often long term disabilities.

Kidssendingmenuts · 13/06/2018 17:28

I personally wouldn't. A big operation like that like the previous poster said may leave long term disabilities but also it's such a little thing to go through such a big operation. And the fact it's a 50/50 chance too. I think it would be best for the cat to be pts. Big hugs xx

Mol1628 · 13/06/2018 17:28

I’ve been in this exact position myself given a 50/50 chance and we didn’t do it. It would have involved a lot of pain and a lot of cage rest it just wouldn’t have been fair.

LanguidLobster · 13/06/2018 17:35

Poor cat. I'd veer towards pts.

It's not an easy decision when you love them

FabulouslyFab · 13/06/2018 17:38

No
Your cat is in pain and distressed at being away ftom you and un a cage at the vets. You don’t speak cat and can’t explain what is happening snd why.
Let him go, don’t make him suffer any longer.
Xx

Allergictoironing · 13/06/2018 17:39

It may also be dependent on the temperament of the cat. If the cat is a compliant friendly housecat then maybe, but if it's used to being out in the garden, would stress or fret if caged for any length of time, or is likely to be very upset at being at the vets for days, then no I wouldn't. I know I couldn't put Boycat through it for example, as he's terrified of almost all people except me, but I may consider it for Girlcat (though she might never trust me again or forgive me if I did).

DramaAlpaca · 13/06/2018 17:40

I'd pts in that situation. I couldn't put a pet through the inevitable pain & distress they would have to go through. I'm so sorry you are facing this. Pts is sometimes the kindest thing we can do for our pets, hard though it is.

MagnifyingGlassSearch · 13/06/2018 17:50

We have already made the decision to pts. It happened this morning. She was only 2 years old... The 50/50 thing keeps going round my head in a 'what if' kind of way. It's too late now.

I would ask what the prognosis would be if the operation is successful, and make a decision based on that.

I could not just pts, I could never forgive myself, if there is hope.

I'm heartbroken for you, sending hugs.

LanguidLobster · 13/06/2018 17:53

Aw, you did the best thing you could for her.

ifonly4 · 13/06/2018 17:55

So sorry OP. It's such a hard decision to make, but I've read so many times people putting their cat through surgery after an accident and there being long term problems, many of which have resulted in having their cat pts. You did the right thing not letting her suffer any more. Try and hold onto the fact that during the life your little cat had a great life with you and she was loved and looked after, everything a cat could want.

Icepinkeskimo · 13/06/2018 17:56

I'm so sorry OP you posted whilst I was replying.

Please accept my condolences

DramaAlpaca · 13/06/2018 17:56

You did the right thing for your lovely puss, OP.

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers

Vinorosso74 · 13/06/2018 17:57

I'm so sorry what a hard decision but you made the right one for your cat. I'm sure I'd be going over the "what if" too. She could have been left with issues meaning a poor quality of life which wouldn't have been fair on her.

Mol1628 · 13/06/2018 18:24

You did the right thing. And it would have been more painful for you all to go through the distress of seeing her struggling through the op and recovery.

picklemepopcorn · 13/06/2018 18:33

No. Let her go.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/06/2018 21:28

Very sorry to hear about your cat OP. I think you made exactly the right decision and I would have done the same. Flowers

Benji13 · 13/06/2018 21:43

So sorry for your loss. I think it was the right decision we just can't explain these things to our fur babies. You did the best thing xx

MrsZB · 13/06/2018 21:47

I’m so sorry OP. It sounds like you did the best thing for your darling kitty. She is at peace now. Try not to torment yourself thinking of the what-ifs.

FabulouslyFab · 14/06/2018 15:56
