Not using the litter tray

Help! My new kitten is pooing everywhere! She uses her litter tray to wee in but poos all over the living room! On the floor, on the sofa.. it's minging!

It's really runny.. is that normal?

Any tips for getting her to use the litter tray? She's 11 weeks. I've tried stern voice and showing her it then putting her in litter tray but it's not making any difference. She's been here a week now. :(

Kitten should not have runny poo. Have you changed the food she was on and have you taken her to the vet?

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/06/2018 09:04

Where did you get her from? Runny poo isn’t good in kittens.

dementedpixie · 10/06/2018 09:26

No it shouldn't be runny? What food are you giving? Have they seen a vet?

MsHomeSlice · 10/06/2018 09:29

Vet trip for the runny poo for sure

Other than that some cats like a pee tray and a poo tray. Given that she is happy to use the tray to pee then I guess she is happy with the type of litter you are using, but some of them can be fussy about that too.

Broken11Girl · 10/06/2018 09:37

Jeez she's a baby! Please stop shouting at her and shoving her in it Sad

chemenger · 10/06/2018 09:54

She needs to go to the vet, runny poo is not normal. You’re not going to cure an upset tummy in a tiny baby by shouting at her, surprisingly.

massistar · 10/06/2018 11:10

I didn't say I shouted at her or shoved her in it.. :(

Somebody told me it was normal so I'll take her to vets tomorrow.

I'm using the exact same food she had before we got her so no change there.

Thanks for the advice all. Visit to the vets it is.

Has she been wormed? When mine had runny poo the vet prescribed pro-kolin paste which helped

viccat · 10/06/2018 11:24

A stern voice and putting her in the litter tray is just creating a negative association with it. Cats don't respond to punishment, they only respond to positive feedback when they do what you want them to do.

How long have you had her?

massistar · 10/06/2018 11:52

We've only had her a week. I've been giving her lots of praise when she does do it in the litter tray so was trying to distinguish between the 2 with a different tone.

How is your kitten doing now?

massistar · 13/06/2018 10:22

Took her to the vets on Monday and she gave me worming powder and ProKolin. Seems to be helping.. she's not pooing as much and seems to have a bit more control. Still a bit hit and miss with the litter tray but a big improvement! We're putting her in the downstairs shower room at night now as well which I think is also helping as it's smaller so she's using the litter tray consistently then.

She's a sweetheart otherwise.. very playful and cuddly. Smile

Glad kitty is doing better.

What do you use to clear up on soft furnishings? My cat went a bit bonkers recently with fleas and we had a few random poos - I get really hesitant about which cleaning agents to use

massistar · 13/06/2018 10:35

Luckily we have an old leather sofa!! I used a cloth with biological washing liquid and spritzed it with Febreze!

Hope the poos continue to improve. It might be worth putting an extra litter tray down for her somewhere. Some cats don't like using dirty litter trays or the same ones they wee in.

massistar · 13/06/2018 12:32

Thanks ifonly. I've got her another litter tray now as well.

She's currently running round the room like a maniac chasing flies!

She’s a proper cutie.

rupertpenryswife · 13/06/2018 19:08

Oh she is so gorgeous. How is she doing now?

massistar · 13/06/2018 19:41

Only one mishap today so getting better. The poo is definitely not squirting out of her any more !

She's such a bundle of joy.. I'm a slave to her already!

Glad to hear things are improving! Our cat used to poo on the floor, couldn't figure out why - we got her a second litter box with different litter in and she uses it. Bizarre. But worked.

rupertpenryswife · 14/06/2018 19:55

Glad you have your role correct, poor little mite with a bad stomach, glad she is on the mend.

ibneen1 · 19/06/2018 23:28

How's your little furball doing?

She's adorable :)

Is she using the litter box now?

Hope this helps :)

all the best

massistar · 20/06/2018 11:06

Getting much better thanks! The vet has given me some anti-bs as it turned out that 3 other kittens in the litter had a tummy bug.

She likes to sit on my shoulder..
