Poorly cat - any ideas?

My cat seems to have something around his jawline that’s bothering him. He’s scratched at it a little and cried out in pain. I managed to get a feel and it seems swollen. I will obviously be taking him to the vet tomorrow but am wondering whether it could be more urgent. He’s currently sitting outside on the garden chair and doesn’t want to come inside. Very unlike him!

He may be in pain. I'd take him to the vet tonight.

Cats can be prone to bad teeth or gums. Could it be that? My kitty has been poorly (luckily she seems to be on the mend now although we still don't know what has been wrong). The vet checked her teeth and gums and also looked for any grass caught in her mouth/throat that can cause irritation.

Thank you both. I’m hoping it is something to do with his teeth (maybe an abcess) so can be easily fixed. He’s indoors now and seems quite settled so I’ll wait until tomorrow for the vet.

I would call the out of hours vet for advice. The phone lines are generally managed by nurses so they can advise the best thing.

I did just as he came running into the room covered in blood! It was all very dramatic. The vet seems to think it was an abscess that has burst and no need for any urgency as he’ll probably start to feel much better now. Appointment first thing in the morning though!

Bit late in the evening to be asking you, sorry, but do you have any painkiller such as loxicom that you can give him? He probably is feeling much better now anyway. Hope he and you sleep well.

Thank you everyone. He had a good night followed by an expensive vet visit this morning! It was indeed an abscess and he’s been cleaned up and given an antibiotic jab. Hope he stays out of trouble in the future!
