Cat with swellings in belly

I've just seen a cat in my garden. It looked quite young, and generally healthy. But it had two huge swellings, about the size of tennis balls, in its abdomen- hanging down kind of where a cow's udders would be. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'm obviously concerned about the cat, but in all honesty I'm more concerned about my own, as a cursory google threw up a few infectious diseases. My princess is of course fully vaccinated up, but I don't want to put her at risk. Any ideas?

Could be teats? Could she be feeding kittens? Doesn't sound good whatever it is. I would put down food and see if you can get it coming regularly so you can keep an eye/do something if necessary.

Could it be a hernia, have a look at website images, can you catch it and pop it to the vet.

Doobigetta · 22/05/2018 20:53

Hmm. Wish I hadn't googled. Hernia is a possibility, but all the ones in the image search were shaved. These were furry lumps. Literally as if a couple of tennis balls were in its tummy. Not like teats. And wouldn't there be more than two if they were teats?

Maybe they were shaved in the pics because they had an operation to repair it, the hernia could be in it's abdomen inside but the fur would cover them.

Could be tumours Sad. Pregnant? Mastitis is lumpy but never seen bigger than a ping pong ball, not a tennis ball.

A cat's primordial pouch can look lumpy and like a swelling. A neighbour's cat looks quite misshapen with her's, but is perfectly healthy.

Sounds fat to me. Google primordial pouch

viccat · 22/05/2018 22:15

Is it long haired? Badly matted fur can look like that.

bonzo77 · 22/05/2018 22:32

Wow. I just googled primordial pouch. I’d noticed my cat getting a bit saggy but no fatter, and now I know what it is. She’s 8 and it’s getting more obvious now. Hadn’t worried me as so many cats get it. Thought it was the cat equivalent of crepy neck / jowls / saggy boobs!

thecatneuterer · 22/05/2018 23:12

Regarding teats - a cat has as many enlarged teats as she has kittens - so two kittens means two teats in use, four kittens means four teats etc, so still a possibility.

Huh. Primordial pouch, who knew. I think that's what it was. Thank you!
