Help! My cat keeps pooing on rug!

Hello. We have a two year old cat who was litter trained since we adopted her from rescue. Since she was spayed and allowed out (about a year ago) she has always chosen to do her business in our garden. She doesn’t leave the garden. Even during the Beast from the East she chose to go outside. We still have litter tray for her for emergencies because we don’t let her out at night but it hasn’t been used for almost a year. She knows where it is. In the last week, she has chosen to scratch (like she would at litter) and poo on a silk Chinese rug every other night or so! I have been keeping the door to this room shut at night recently but last night DH forgot and she’s done it again. Why? And what shall I do? Btw, I’m booking her a vet appointment anyway because various family members have mentioned she looks “sad” or “down”. I’m worried she’s ill. Thanks.

Move her food bowl to where she poked. They won't poo where they eat.

Pooed, not Poked!

Have any other cats moved into the neighbourhood? It sounds as though she might be scared to go outside at night sometimes. I know this doesn’t excuse her not using the litter tray though. Has anything about the litter tray changed? Position.Brand of litter?

No new cats but all the cats that have been staying in through the winter are now coming out. They don’t come into our garden or house though. We don’t let her out after dark. I’ve got a vet app booked now because something is not quite right about her. I can’t put my finger on it. Thanks for your suggestions.
