My cat smells like rotten fish

There is a whiff of rotten fish wafting from somewhere on/in brillocat. He's 9 months old, accident prone, eats wet pouches with a little bit of dry.

Any experience/ advice re whiffsome cats?

He's fallen in the pond twice, got bitten badly on the bum and got a stick caught in his gob so far. What new thing is this?

When my cat began to smell bad it out it was an infection in her mouth, does your cats saliva smell?

HardAsSnails · 19/05/2018 20:18

Did he see the vet after the bite and stick incidents? Might be an abscess from one of those or a new injury.

brillopants · 19/05/2018 20:20

Yes I think it's his breath, it's intermittent- I've looked and it all looks pink and healthy in there.

I don't brush his teeth, perhaps I should? It's not something I've ever done with previous moggies.
I found a munched mouse outside and wonder if he's got bits of old gizzards stuck in his teeth.

I too am wondering about an infection following the stick incident. Bad smells are always a sign of something. I think it's vet time.

brillopants · 19/05/2018 20:21

Yes, he got antibiotics for the bite and the stick was checked and all ok.

Anal glands? My dog's bum smells like fish when his glands are leaking Envy

brillopants · 19/05/2018 20:23

Yes, it may be the stick has had it's revenge. Vets it is. Again. 😼

Arg! Leaky bum glands are a thing? ** Oh what new horror is this?
He's already a poo dangler due to his super floofy tail. Skid marks and now leakage too? 🙀I shall be having severe words with him.

He is actually floofy and cuddlesome despite his pong.

Vet here - agree that fishy smells usually relate to anal glands being too full. They are 2 glands just inside the back passage that usually empty themselves when a solid stool passes. If they become overfull, they are uncomfortable, the cat will lick its bottom, hence fishy smell on breath too. Your vet can empty them.

I was just going to say anal glands too 🤢
