Outdoor cat - but no cat flap!

Hi, i posted a few weeks ago with questions about our recently adopted cat.

He has settled in beautifully and has really taken a shining to our DD.

We are now thinking that in the next few weeks we will start letting him outside ( he was an outdoor cat before we got him at rescue centre) but the main issue is we don't have a cat flap.

We currently rent so putting one in the main door isnt an option and our windows arent suitable for him to get in/out of.

We both work full time so if we let him out in the morning, he would be outside until we got home from work about 6pm.

Would an outside cat house be useful - would he actually use it? I was thinking about this one and putting some fluffy blankets/dry food/water inside it.

Thanks

Can you not ask for landlord's permission to put one on the back door?

It's not particularly safe to leave a cat outside without access back into the home, if they feel threatened by people or get into a fight with other cats, they need to have safe access back home. And they are much more likely to stray and seek another home elsewhere, too.

Being out might be ok in this weather but come October it will be wet, miserable and dark by 6pm...

Thanks for the reply- we dont have a back door just a main front door that has a path leading to our garden etc.

I will ask landlord again re cat flap but they have an issue with any 'gifts' the cat my bring in while we are out.

They dont want half eaten mice/birds etc getting dragged through the house, which i can understand but i dont want to keep the cat indoors all the time when he is desperate to be outside again
