Possible kitten adoption

A colleagues husband has started doing some work on a house - cutting down and sorting out overgrowth at the very end of the garden and has come across a kitten
He left that bit alone and has been keeping an eye on her the last few days in case mum came to take her but no other cats have been near so now it looks like she'll need a proper home - am I mad to be considering it? Haven't owned a cat before, what do I need to know?

Oh bless. It'll need a vet check. Prepare to have to deworm, deflea and vaccinate. Get insurance. Keep it in until it's big enough to be neutered. Start by confining it in one room with good food, litter tray and water.

So approximately how big/old is the kitten? Has your husband given it any food? If not I doubt it will have eaten in days. Is it so small that it needs syringe feeding? (Unlikely as it would be dead by now without it's mother). It's lucky to still be alive. Foxes prey on kittens.

You need to take it in straight away. Get it to a vet for a check up and take it from there. Even if you can't keep it then you can contact a rescue. But what you can't do is leave it another day where it is.

@thecatneuterer really not an expert but it's at 'big kitten' stage he said, not a tiny scrap of a thing but definitely not adult cat either
He's got it (colleagues husband not mine!) at the house he's working on ATM but it's a shack rather than a proper house really so will need to make a decision if she's coming to us really soon

OK, so he/she is being fed then. Well whatever you do you can't leave it there. Is it friendly? If so it obviously wasn't born in the gardens and must have been a pet that has either escaped or been dumped. So take it in. Take it to a vet (for both these things you will need a proper cat carrier - don't even think of trying to transport it in box of any description) and then decide. If you feel you really don't want a cat then contact local rescues, but I bet you'll fall for it.

If it's big kitten stage then it's probably old enough to neuter, and that will need doing straight away, along with the first vaccination.

@thecatneuterer I'm already thinking of names! But yes, vet first - check she's ok and that there's no more kitten surprises
