My cat has no voice

My approx 8 yr old male cat has lost his voice. He tries to meow and purr but no sound is coming out. This only started today.

Has anyone experienced this?

He seems fine in himself and not ill so not sure what to do atm.

Hopeful bump.

I think my old cat's voice was croaky before his hyperthyroidism was diagnosed. This was my first experience of the condition. He might have an infection, nodules or a case of laryngitis?

abbsisspartacus · 06/04/2018 21:18

Toothache?

abbsisspartacus · 06/04/2018 21:18

Mine would do silent meows for sympathy

SilentBob · 06/04/2018 21:22

Maybe a stupid question but have you changed any cleaning products recently? I used zoflora once and both my cats lost their voices.

SilentBob · 06/04/2018 21:25

Posted too soon before I said- I took them to the vet and everything else was ruled out. Turns out zoflora (and other cleaning products) are not good for the furry fuckers' respiratory health. Who knew?!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 06/04/2018 22:02

Thank you all :)

No new cleaning products. He normally can meow just fine, constantly. He is still doing this but no sound.
I have taken him to bed with me (because I am pathetic) and he is laying next to me and I can hear him purring now, but he still can't meow. 🤔

My little Pigeon has never been able to meow. When she was a kitten, the vet said she probably didn't have anything to say yet 😁 She's now about 16mths old and still only purrs (and hisses if anyone tried to take food off her). I shut her in the bathroom once by mistake for about 3 hours, not a sound from her. The rest of the tribe would have been shouting until I let them out. It's quite cute that she is mute.
Sorry, that doesn't help much with yours though

AlexaAmbidextra · 07/04/2018 01:20

I would get him checked. One of mine lost his voice. He would open his mouth to miaow but no sound came out. When the vet checked him it turns out he had lymphoma in his throat that was compressing his vocal chords.

ScreamingValenta · 07/04/2018 01:23

Get your little chap checked out by the vet if his voice doesn't return in the next couple of days. Hope he is soon back to his vocal self.

MaitlandGirl · 07/04/2018 01:24

If you’re in Australia get to the vets ASAP - this is a sign of being bitten by a paralysis tick and is an emergency.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 07/04/2018 10:08

Not in Australia, but thank you.

Still
No sound this morning, I'll give him until Monday as currently he is completely fine except for silent meows Smile
