Cat coughing

Chocolou · 23/03/2018 12:03

My lovely lady has developed a cough. Mainly happens at night and coughs once or twice but for 30 seconds or so at a time but if I pick her up and soothe her throat she calms.

She has taken to sitting on the radiator so don't know if she is dehydrated as she gets quite hot!!

Not sure whether to take her to vets yet or not. She is 13 good health and up to date with her vaccinations.

We've had exactly the same with our cat. He only coughs when he's been asleep and it doesn't happen every day. The vet is at a loss as to what's causing it as he had a heart scan on Tuesday and is fine. He did say it could be asthma but didn't push us to test for that so we are monitoring him for the time being and seeing what happens.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2018 13:08

One of mine has done it ever since I've had her. I thought it was feline asthma as it's the same as the video footage of it on YouTube. But apparently more likely to be hairball related.

Want2beme · 23/03/2018 13:26

She might have a virus and need medication - steroids?

TroysMammy · 23/03/2018 20:35

Troy had a cough. It turned out to be heart failure. Please take your kitty to the vets.

Chocolou · 24/03/2018 07:28

She didn't cough at all yesterday but then she wasn't laid on the radiator and I didn't plug my air freshener thing in that's close by. I'll monitor her this weekend and take her to the vet on Monday.

Make sure you tell the vet you are using a plug in air freshener or whatever it is in the vicinity of your coughing cat.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/03/2018 08:35

Is the air freshener new?

Chocolou · 24/03/2018 09:13

No it's not. It's a Yankee candle scented piece thing. You plug the pot in and put in different cups. Had the scent a while now. Maybe dust has got in? She was fine last night when it wasn't on.

Did you go to the vet today?

Chocolou · 04/05/2018 11:40

Sorry for delay in updating but my work has been chaotic.

I did take her to the vets who examined her heart, lungs and temperature and they were all fine. Told to monitor her for another 2 weeks in the hope it will improve.

I took her again this week and they did bloods all came back clear and again clear with all the above exams too. The vet did however find a small chain of lumps along her salivary glands and she took a small aspiration (think that's the word!) so just waiting for the results to come back from the lab but won't hear til next week.

I've got loxicom for her and it did help that day but maybe not so much now she seems happy in herself and has normal behaviour and eating normally has lost a little bit of weight but I'm fearing the worst.

I'm truly heartbroken for my girl. I just know it's not going to be good news. I love her so much and with the stress of my work I just can't deal with this too at the moment

My girl had a lump in her neck that the vet thought was lymphoma. It wasn't. It was a necrotic lymph node. If her bloods are not indicating lymphoma then that is reassuring. Could it be that that she's got a virus/ a bit run down and her glands are up as in humans.

abbsisspartacus · 04/05/2018 12:09

My neighbour had a coughing and sneezing cat turns out it was a blade of grass

Chocolou · 04/05/2018 13:25

toddler they're only prominent on the left side. Her cough is wheezy then she give s two big coughs and she is fine. The vet did say even if bloods are clear it could still indicate cancer. It's just a case of waiting for sample to come back. If she had virus they said it would clear in 2 weeks and it has not it's got progressively worse.

It's not a cough like she needs to bring something up more wheezy. She's an indoor cat and very rarely goes out.

The vet has just called and sadly it's bad news. She has metastatic carcinoma.

I'm truly heartbroken

I'm so sorry, I really don't know what to say Flowers

MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 05/05/2018 02:36

Very sorry OP. Have been through cancer and chemo with a very dearly loved cat. Thinking of you and your lovely lady.

MrsCatE · 05/05/2018 07:17

Really sorry op.

Chocolou · 05/05/2018 10:36

I'm heartbroken and it's killing me. She is the kindest and most sweetest cat ever. She was my 30th birthday present along with her step brother cat.

He knows something is up. He's smelling her a lot and not biting her! He laid with us in bed instead of her which he never does. She slept downstairs. He is a very intuitive cat and will be so sad to see her go.
