We've just got a lovely rescue. He's about 18 months and been here less than a week so far. We've feeding him a felix sachet morning and evening with Harringtons dry food available at other times. He's got a big appetite and scoffs his food quickly. He's drinking well.

Problem is he has terrible wind, really stinky. I had to clear up a poo from the carpet earlier (first accident, he's been really good with the litter tray), and that was soft and absolutely stank.

Should we be changing his diet or is this possibly due to settling in?

To try and save your carpet, put another litter tray down for him. In my experience, they do get smelly poos from time to time, but there are some foods that contribute to it. With mine, it's Whiskas wet food. Is this a recent change in him? Maybe the vet could suggest an alternative?

I feel your pain, they sometimes do the stinkiest things.

Mine's better on a mix of quality wet and high meat content biscuits

God I just thought of this thread.

I'd gone to bed, cat only last used her tray 2 hours ago, then suddenly just now there was a whiff as she went again and I wearily got up to deal with it (cant fall asleep with that!)

We took a rescue cat in about 6 weeks ago. He was constantly pooping stinky sloppy mounds. We thought it was due to the stress of the move at first but when it continued we researched his diet.

He was on Felix pouches and Purina dry which are both low in meat content and high in grains and cereal.

We changed him to Natures Menu Country Hunter pouches and Thrive dry food just two weeks ago and the transformation is amazing. He poops far less frequently, they are firm and barely smell. His fur is silky and very shiny and he has loads of energy :)

Might be worth a shot!

Change the food!
Our rescue boy turned up with a revolting stinky bum and awful, huge soft poos. That would be the felix...
Six weeks of high quality grain free food and he's right as ninepence.

Harry had the same problem with Felix. When he first arrived I bulk bought it as it was on special offer and I wished I hadn’t! We changed his food and he was fine afterwards.

Going completely grain free might well solve the problem, and as high a percentage of meat as you can manage.
