Farting cat

I have owned 10 cats during the last 40 years and had only once experienced a cat farting when I picked one up around her tummy. It was noisy, with no smell - just an expulsion of air it seemed. .

We have had a feral cat from our garden staying in a dog cage in our hall overnight over the last few weeks. He farts most nights, audibly and they stink! How normal is this?

(We feed him most, if not all, of his food at the moment, so I don't think he's scavenging and he doesn't poo indoors so I can't check how healthy he is from that).

My boy does super stinky farts when he's surprised by something! If the food is a lot different to what he's used to then there's probably a period of adjustment of digestion?

Could it be worms?

My cats were very stinky farters when I adopted them but stopped when wormed.

It could be worms - he's not had any worming tablets (I'm not sure I'd get my fingers out in one piece). We've been feeding him daily for about 6 months, and every mealtime since he was neutered in November. Maybe the food is too rich after 4-5 years of whatever he could find?

I've never known a cat fart in all my years of having cats. They must have very good manners.

It's like humans. Only boy cats fart. They probably do it as loudly as possible and laugh afterwards too.

Perhaps he just doesn't have very good manners? He has lived on the streets for a while. He bolts his food too!

Our boy cat farts if you pick him too soon after dinnertime. He always looks affronted by it though, in a 'look what you made me do' way.

I can understand it if you pick them up as you're putting pressure on their stomach and if you did that to me, I'd fart too Our stray boy just lets them go when he's on his own in his cage.

Colin farts. Silent but violent ones

Looks like I spoke to soon. Lounging on my friends soars bed with his cat. And she's just let a silent but deadly drop. How can such a lovely cat produce something so foul?!

Dcat gets trumpy if she’s been dining out on rodent snacks between meals. Although trump doesn’t feel like the right word as they are always silent but deadly 🤢🤢🤢

My girl cat farts. It's so fucking vile it puts my DP's counter farts to shame.

The boy cat never farts. I suspect this may be due to his dislike of expending any additional energy and nothing to do with manners.

My first cat used to let out silent killers when she was a kitten but I think that was to do with her food at the time.
We had a surveyor round once who I ended up working with some months later, and he remembered me by the stinky kitten farts!

Crush a worming tablet up and then mix it in with a gravy based cat pouch.Alternatively try a spot on wormer.
Whatever you do dont get Bob Martins stuff, you can get wormers very cheap from Animed.
I'd try that first then if hes still farting I'd try him on dry kibble for sensitive stomachs. We had a cat that did this a lot and it was disgusting. Nothing really made any difference I think it was just him.

Crushing the worming tablet is a good idea (and a definite NO to Bob Martin).

If we had a dog, visitors would believe us saying it was responsible for the smell - but I think there is some skepticsm where a cat is involved
