DIY toys

Just thought I'd start a thread because I realised that out of all the cool toys my cats have, their favourite toys aren't meant to be toys at all.

Let's share our ideas!

  • Beauty blender: watson stole this out of my makeup bag and its now a firm favourite. Its too big to pose a choking issue, but the egg shape and spongey material makes it ideal for pouncing and games of fetch.
  • Avocado stone: try chucking one on the floor as soon as you cut it out. It slips and slides on tiles and they love it.
  • Over and above all their fishing rod toys, their favourite "chase" toy is one of those long plastic packaging cables they use to wrap around freight boxes. The weirdness of the plastic means it moves in unsuspected ways and its also indestructible meaning they cant chew through it.
  • Spaghetti: make sure you supervise when doing this so they cant eat it. Take a piece of cooked spaghetti and stick it so it dangles off the edge of a table or counter. It "dances" and has a weird sticky texture they seem to love!

Those sound great.

Bert helped himself to a toffee penny from the Quality Street at Christmas. He likes playing with it on a tiled floor. I think it's probably just the right combination of shiny/crinkly/slippery. No one else wanted it at Christmas and I'm certain no one wants it now so it's his!

Peacock feather (free from your local stately home) - best cat toy in the world.

Feathers, of pretty much any sort. I drive to the local tip to harvest seagull feathers blown against the chain link fence. He currently has some swan wing feathers that have proved particularly durable. He didn't like the emu feathers though!
Rings from the neck of milk bottles, some red polystyrene balls he stole from next door's Christmas wreath, ear plugs, screwed up tin foil...

Our kitten steals socks. Hours of fun chasing them around the house.

Fattycat adored the plastic covers that go on the thermometers at work. (Nurse) I tend to go home with a pocket full of them. Was gobsmacked when she fished them out of the bin. Didn't think she had the brains.

A pacemaker lead was popular with a few of my foster cats.

Current favorite is one box on its side inside another box face up.

A cardboard box. Any cardboard box. Size and purpose is irrelevant.
