How much litter do you get through per month?

We got our two rescue cats a fortnight ago and I bought a 30 litre bag of Cat's Best Oko Plus cat litter for them. Two weeks later and I've just had to order another! Are we getting through a lot, or is that quite typical? It's £28 per bag from Amazon, so quite a big outgoing if I'm buying two bags per month. It does seem to be very good litter though.

Are you changing the whole tray a lot? With that litter you don't need to change as often as you scoop out pee and poo and top up as required. Try zooplus/bitiba too for good priced litter

We're using the Cat's Best Nature Gold (smart pellets). One cat. We get through 5kg a month.

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/02/2018 16:14

Which is about 10L per month.

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/02/2018 16:16

As dementedpixie says, it's cheaper on Zooplus or Bitiba. Around £18 I think?

Sunshine49 · 03/02/2018 16:31

Thanks all! I've only changed it fully once in those two weeks, and the cats don't go outside yet. I wonder how I'm getting through so much! Perhaps my cats are using the tray more than most - I do find quite a lot of poop in there each day (too much information)! I put down a couple of inches in the tray.

I will definitely check out Zooplus/Bitiba!

So long as you're regularly removing poo and wee clumps, Cat's Best doesn't need to be fully changed anywhere near as often as other types of litter.

I'm emptying out the tray every 4-6 weeks, and then I sift the litter to save and reuse the unused pellets, and I only discard the disintegrated litter / sawdust.

Batmanwearspants · 03/02/2018 16:36

We use those catsan easy litter things once a week which are usually around 2 for £7.

Sunshine49 · 03/02/2018 16:40

Thanks TheSecondofHerName! Is Cat's Best a wood pellet type of litter? Perhaps I need to pay more attention and ensure that I'm only scooping out the used pellets.

One thing I don't like about Oko is that I do find bits of it all over the room - but I guess that's the same with any litter! They have a large open tray at the moment - perhaps a closed one would help?

I only tried cats best oko plus once as it tracks everywhere! The cats best smart pellets (nature gold) don't track as badly and are more pellet like but is still a clumping litter. I was using it but it went out of stock for a wee while. I currently use worlds best which is also an eco clumping litter

Madbengalmum · 03/02/2018 16:46

Three cats = 2 x 30 kg Wood pellets per month
Cost £11 total. Smells nice and this is new litter twice a day in three trays.

Madbengalmum · 03/02/2018 16:46

That is pets at home wood pellets.

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/02/2018 16:48

We're using a top entry tray, so any escaped litter ends up falling back into the tray when the cat jumps out.

The sifting to save 'good' pellets when I empty the tray is a bit tedious, but it's only once a month.

The catsan smart packs are inexpensive and convenient but sadly aren't compostable, which doesn't suit us as we compost everything except the poo.

theunsure · 03/02/2018 16:51

40l Catsan per month here. That is with 3 mainly indoor cats. I buy in bulk online so is cheaper.
I empty it completely twice a week, take poo out daily.we have a huge lidded tray that takes 10l a time but its the only way they will share.

theunsure · 03/02/2018 16:54

Sorry that should have been 80l a month! Had a dippy moment there!
We use 20l per week, tray takes 10l

Lauren83 · 03/02/2018 16:57

We use that litter and I probably use about 10l a week l and that's for 5 cats, I agree use zooplus it's usually cheaper and often on offer, I remove used litter as soon as I see if and do a full empty maybe once every 10 days

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 03/02/2018 17:10

I use this litter for one cat and only change it once a month.

It needs to be very deep and you just scoop the lumps out.

Best litter I've ever used and there is never a smell.

Sunshine49 · 03/02/2018 17:28

Thanks for the tips everyone! I'm going to try and be a bit more scrupulous when scooping bits out, as it sounds like I'm definitely getting through too much litter.

Ilovewelshrarebit - I've found that with the Oko too - the lack of smell is amazing and it clumps very well! How deep do you do yours?

15kg of intersand classic lasts about 6 weeks

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 03/02/2018 23:24

At least 3-4 inches, the tray looks very full but it works.
