Flea treatment 2018

Not the most exciting of topics but I'd be interested in hearing everyone's approach to de-fleaing their furry overlords Smile

I used Advantage (large cat dose as over 4kg) in 2016-2017 with good results. Does anyone know if it's still a good bet? I hear conflicting things about which treatments are on the wane etc (Frontline?)

I have some sealed, in-date Advantage in the cupboard so the furball has just received his first dose of 2018 (slight lapse over winter ahem, we seem to have got away with it).

I like Advantage as it doesn't require a prescription and I can buy it online. Budget friendly too. Catface spends lots of time in the garden once the weather improves so I'd like to know he's protected Smile

I need to buy some too small cat has been lick lick licking again and has a bare patch on her bum.

I haven’t heard anything bad about Advantage. We use Bravecto for fleas and Profender for worms. Both are done three monthly so I don’t have to upset his lordship too often!

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/02/2018 18:38

Bravecto for fleas and ticks every 3 months, milbemax for worms at same time.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/02/2018 18:49

Do you think Profender is ok for worms @Lonecatwithkitten? I can’t give Harry pills because of his dodgy jaw so I’m hoping the Profender spot on is still ok!

GingerKitCat · 02/02/2018 18:57

Thanks everyone! I've not heard of Bravecto, am I right in thinking it's prescription-only?

Glad to hear Advantage seems okay, cat tolerates it so I'll keep using for now.

I tried Drontal de-worming tablets for the cat (4kg+ dose) but it was all but impossible to get them in him. I tried trickery, watched instructional youtube videos and concealed them in favourite food. The resulting kerfuffle caused the tablet to dissolve all over my fingers and the remainder was spat out. May have to revisit deworming Hmm

I use advocate for fleas (also does some worms). Was using milbemax for worms but last time got profender which is a spot on

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/02/2018 19:47

Profender is fine just mine hate spot ons more than tablets.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/02/2018 20:24

Thanks Lone. I don't like giving him the spot ons but I worry I'll end up with a cat with another fractured jaw if I try giving him a pill!

dementedpixie · 02/02/2018 20:28

One of mine took their antibiotics when I stuck them in a bit of webbox stick

We've just finished our first three months on Bravecto. I'm sold. I've spent years with fleabites and a vet who insisted that Program + Broadline was fine as the larger dose of the active ingredient compared with Frontline would work. Nope. Then there was all the kerfuffle about eggs being contaminated with fipronil and I realised that was what was in Broadline. Didn't fancy stroking a cat with that all over its fur so I insisted I changed, and got one bite in three months - winter last year was 2-3 a week... don't ask about summer.
(I react badly).

We use Comfortis and it's a tablet you crush into their food which tastes meaty. Never had any problems. Our cat is 5.3kg so a big boy.

Bananarama12 · 02/02/2018 21:17

Stick with advantage it does the same job as the rest of them. I don't like the stuff that lasts 3 months. That's a lot of pesticides all at once. Bravecto has been linked to fits and even deaths. Just my opinion though.

moonbells · 02/02/2018 21:33

I thought Bravecto's only been linked to fits in dogs, not cats.

Allergictoironing · 02/02/2018 21:36

Oh the joy of being owned by indoor only cats! Advocate spot on once a year only Grin.
