How do I shave my pussy?

One of our cats is VERY fluffy, which is lovely. But... today for the the third time in a week I've had to remove a nugget of shit from his fluffy behind, which was beyond grim. I can't even get it out properly, it's so firmly bedded in the fur. It's been stressful for him as well because I've ended up having to chase him and pin him down. I spoke to the vet who said some people use animal clippers. I've seen some on Amazon but I have zero experience. How short should it be to solve the problem but without leaving him cold? How do I keep him still to do it? Is there a better way altogether? Any advice from fluffy cat owners appreciated. Cat is only young - 7 months, if that makes a difference.

I was going to say clippers. Start off longer than you think you’ll need and then you can adjust it depending on what suits.
Maybe distract with a treat?

RedCarsGoFaster · 31/01/2018 18:04

I use scissors on my cat. Just for her bottom and knickerbockers. She's good as good for them, and I use very sharp stars so it's over with quickly.

Clippers are too noisy and take too long. I even bought low noise children's ones.

BulletFox · 31/01/2018 18:07

Oh god. There was a poster below who had to do this recently, I think she was advised it was a 2 person job and to wrap cat in a blanket like a burrito whilst the other person does the clipping.

Apparently nurses at the vet can do it as well.

This makes me thankful mine's short haired as she's quite a frequent pooer!

Leviticus · 31/01/2018 18:11

Thanks all!

Redcars I was advised not to use scissors by the vets because apparently they see a lot of injuries from slips of the hand! Also he is neutered but they don't actually cut the balls off so I'm a bit worried about poking around back there with scissors.

Really? Mine has never said anything! I even use scissors to remove wet diarrhea off her, as she won't stand for anything else especially if it involves anything like a wash!

To be fair, she lies on the floor when I do it, and submits so she's nice and still. It's worked for 12 years so far!

retirednow · 31/01/2018 18:21

Take him to the vet nurse for a hygiene cut.

Leviticus · 31/01/2018 18:22

Ooh retired I like the sound of someone else doing it! How much and how often is that likely to be?

I dont know, i read this advice on mn last week when someone had a similar problem. Ive only ever had short haired cats but have cleaned the occasional bottom with cotton wool, ive never actually done a short back and sides Grin

BulletFox · 31/01/2018 18:33

I just had a look below, it's the thread 'lump of poo in boy cat's bum'.

Shock
BluebellTheDonkey · 31/01/2018 19:53

That was me! And yes I did use scissors, but only to remove the clump once I had softened it with a warm flannel and separated it from his body. EnvyWe didn't need to do the burrito in the end but I was terrified of accidentally cutting him! When we go to the vets I am going to ask them to shave him for me. He's not long haired but has very fluffy nether regions! Good luck OP, personally I would get a professional to do it for me!

Want2beme · 31/01/2018 19:58

I have a longhaired girl and when she gets cling ons, I put her on the utility room worktop, get the cat comb, quickly comb out the cling on and then use a wipe or loo roll with hot water to clean the rest off. I haven't attempted to trim her furry legs, I do trim her ruff, so I'm gonna give it a go when I'm feeling brave enoughHmm

lljkk · 31/01/2018 20:08

I bought some clippers, noise of which terrified Fluffy cat, so that didn't work so good. I now use small scissors to cut out big tangles & would deal with faeces in same way.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2018 20:46

Take him to the vets and ask for a hygiene trim and get his bloomers trimmed. The nurses will do it.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/01/2018 20:47

I once cut my girl with scissors so now I use thinning scissors. My groomer is coming on Friday thank god. I'm getting lots of nuggets at the minute as they need a trim.

HappenstanceMarmite · 02/02/2018 13:50

You can get round ended scissors made especially for this purpose. Got mine from Amazon for around a tenner as I recall. My Ragdoll hates me doing it, but I've suffered one too many shitty-arse-in-my-face incidents so he gets it no matter how much he complains 😱😂when I wake up

Toddlerteaplease · 02/02/2018 16:35

My two have just had their groomer round. Fatty who's usually as good as gold, was very unimpressed and Snorg who usually isn't to keen was as good as gold. Hopefully no more nuggets by the litter tray now!

Thank god the groomer came yesterday. Snorg has the squits!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/02/2018 11:21

Which bit of which cat are we looking at in the first photo?

Delaney4094 · 03/02/2018 11:38

There's a very good site called thecatsite.com which has a forum you can ask on also.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/02/2018 11:55

^ Hah! But does it have Ollie and PB and Mr C and Obie and Toddler's twosome and Ernie and Harry and Each's and Caorich's two and the strays and the rogue siamese that is sometimes fed by the caretaker and have I missed anybody? I'm sure it's dull in comparison anyway.

onemorecakeplease · 03/02/2018 11:57

We bought a little beard trimmer - it’s not that noisy and it’s really good!
I take the guard off and just shave off the little knots and matts she gets in her fur.

Scissors were a nightmare as they get so close to her skin. She doesn’t seem to mind either!

So have a look on eBay for mini beard trimmer

Leviticus · 03/02/2018 16:57

Thanks everyone, good advice. Toddler I couldn't see which bit was which on your cat either, that is one fluffy bum!

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2018 20:21

It's Snorg lying on her back with her paw in the air. She's currently having a massive silk as I've just had to cut her bum, tail and back leg floof as she's got dried diarrhoea on. She would not allow me to wet wipe them at all!! She was trying to groom her self, but the smell was putting her off!
I tried human hair trimmers but they just didn't work on my two.
Her is the finished article. (It's definitely her head!) and fatty too.
