Petplan have paid out for Harry’s Christmas escapade. After excesses it’s only saved us £65 but it’s better than nothing. I was worried they wouldn’t pay for the out of hours vet but there wasn’t a problem.

I was looking at his various claims and realised we’ve made 10 claims in the last 2 years! The poor sod has had a broken jaw, bone infection, kidney problems and now lameness. Because of his age we’ve got a high excess but I’m so pleased we took out Insurance. We’d have found the money somehow but it made it a lot easier.

We currently have one month's free insurance for our rescue cats from Petplan, and they'll be ringing us soon to find out if we want to continue it. From your experience it sounds like that would be a good idea!

How much does insurance tend to cost roughly - does anyone know? And would you recommend Petplan? The rescue centre said they're a bit more expensive than some insurers but that they're the best.

I would definitely keep up insurance. We didn't make a claim for 8 years but I'm glad I did. I did a rough calculation and more has been paid out than we paid in!

I would recommend Petplan, but I know Tesco are good as well and they are cheaper. I pay £28 a month for Harry, but he is a 12 year old walking disaster area (he gets a discount on check ups at the vet ) so it's probably a lot cheaper for other people!

Same here. My pair are also walking disasters. At the last count we were up to £11,000 of claims in 11 months! Good job I love the little buggers!

I'm only up to £4600 in 2 years, Harry is lagging behind! Perhaps the girls could be the face of Tesco Pet Insurance!

DB doesn't have pet insurance and has spent £3k in 7 months on his shihtzu pup

I have Directline. Get a discount for multiple cats have lifetime cover which I was v grateful for when much missed cat developed a chronic condition.

Am now essentially tied into them as one cat is old but I was very happy to put the kittens on with them as they have been great to deal with. Very easy for claims, excess and amounts didn't go up astronomically even when cat was ill.

Even the vet likes them - she says her heart sinks when she hears some insurance companies but she likes them.

About £15 per month for GCat; but has just cost over £1k at the cat dentist. No doubt premiums will increase.

I thought a cat would be cheap to run. Lucky for him that he is so cute...

I have visions of our cats all sitting around in a speakeasy plotting how much they can run up in vets bills.

Of course @DancesWithOtters lovely Dangercat would be there as well!

Ha our old Vinocat would have joined in with that chat as she ran up quite a sum. Luckily the vet didn't charge for everything.
We have the 4 weeks free cover with Petplan for our new lad and was thinking I will continue cover with them but might have a look at Directline-found them good for car insurance and very helpful!
