How to trace owner through the microchip

Can anyone tell me,if a stray cat's taken to a vet and they check the microchip(if there is one fitted) would they disclose the owners details to you,so you can contact them, or is it for the vet to contact the owner? I'm thinking about data protection.

No. The vets will contact the microchip company to find out the owner's details and contact them. Under data protection, we can't give out any details to the finder. We can take your details to pass on if you want us to.
