Cats ear completely blocked???

I have just managed to dislodge a 2cm wide long piece of possibly wax from one of my cats ears! I think there's more in there but he's getting upset with me looking.
About 3 weeks ago for 1 day only he was scratching at his ear, couldn't see anything wrong with it, but it didn't look to bother him since.
I've done some googling and got lots of results for ear mites, but he's not been scratching or head shaking. Has anyone experienced this and what could cause it??

It's the same as humans, some are prone to wax build up and some aren't.
Could still be mites even if he isn't displaying other symptoms. Take him to the vet, you could cause damage poking about yourself.

Could he have a problem with ear mites?

Just been to the pet store and got some drops for ear mites & also says soften wax. I'll see if that makes a difference, otherwise I'll get him an appt with vets. He's nearly 14 and never had mites or ear problems before, so it's a bit out of the blue. I'm not really sure it's mites because from what I've read online he would have been scratching and head shaking but he's not been doing this.

Nothing apart from sterile saline should go in a cat's ear until you have confirmed the ear drum is intacted. Lots of products can damage the middle ear causing balance issues that can be permanent.
