Going out

A cat AIBU! Is it ok to just let them out for half an hour/an hour a day at the moment? They are about 4, they rub along fine as a sibling pair, the odd squabble but also groom each other.

One is indoors most of the time, the other one is out more but usually comes and goes quite freely. No cat flap (moving soon so might get one in new house) but I am at home most of the day. In the summer they have free access all day, almost always in all night. In the winter I would usually put them both out and then give them the option to return every hour or so.

I have started to just let them out in the morning and then shut them in as soon as they return (they are already back inside). I admit that this is primarily out of concern for their safety as there have been killings in the area (we are in SE), but is this fair to the cats? One particularly likes being out but will generally come and go freely during the day but is more reluctant to come in if he is out late afternoon. Once in he just sleeps or sits on my lap trying to stop me from typing. It feels a bit like the argument between concern about terrorist threat and still letting children go on school trips to central London. I have always been in the later camp with the dc so not sure what that says about my relative priorities with respect to the cats Grin.

If they seem happy with this arrangement, then everything's fine. One of mine only goes out for a few minutes a day, her choice, and I go out worth her.

I know one would probably be happier going in and out but I am feeling very protective over them!

It's fine. Mine sometimes doesn't go out for more than a minute (it's too cold for cats apparently) and sometimes just sticks his paw outside and returns to bed HmmGrin
