5 months old kitten with persistent diahrrea. What could it be ?

He has had for a week now. The vet is following it. We are giving him a probiotic mix twice a day. Saw the vet again yesterday and we started panacur. If it doesn't get better, we'll need to give some samples tomorrow. He is bright and playful otherwise but I can't help worrying. He is our little rescue cat.

What food is he on?

A week of diarrhoea isn’t too long, mine have had longer bouts. Await the stool tests, if clear likely to be dietary. Mine changed foods when they had loose bowels as kittens and have been fine since. Vet will advise.

Giardia

He has a quarter of Royal canin digestive wet food and whiskas kitten wet food + whiskas kitten dry food.

I’d be tempted to get him off the whiskas and put him on Royal Canin gastro only (it comes in wet and biscuit formulation). But get the stool tests done.

Try Wainwrights or James Wellbeloved. It’s not full of additives or any nasties. I’ve got mine on grain free wainwrights and it’s fantastic! Firm stools, cat is fuller for longer and his coat is lovely!

I'm getting the poo sample done on Friday of its not getting better.

As he’s already partly on the Royal canin gastro I would eliminate the whiskas from his diet. Make any changes slowly. And get the stool specs done as you say.

Another vote for get him of the Whiskas. Royal Canin is great for tummies.

With ours it was cereal in cat food. We put him on chicken & it cleared up.

Thank you all :) I have called the vet and we are picking up some royal canin wet and dry food. I told the nurse what I was giving him and she said that it was as if I was feeding mc Donald’s to him...I feel bad but it what they were giving to him at the rescue.

We used to have a cat that couldn't tolerate duck or beef. Anything rich.
Whiskas isn't great but I wouldn't say RoyalCanin was either. I would go grain free. Ours like James Wellbeloved but there are even better foods (just they won't eat them!!)

I don't think royal canin is that great tbh considering it's price. I'd look for grain free. Panacur is a wormer I think. When one of mine had runny poo we gave them a pro kolin paste

My cat had a persistent bout of diahorrea when he was about 8 months old...he was fine in himself, still eating and drinking. Vet thought he might have eaten something on his wanders outside (he was venturing out more). She recommended a week of gastro pouches which cost me a fortune but he loved them! Within 4 days it totally cleared and he went back on his normal food and was fine

I went to the vet and I bought some Hill's pet nutrition. No more whiskas.

Hills is also overpriced. Well seeing the vet sells it!

It's all they had..I will look into into the other brand suggested.

Fed my 2 kittens plain boiled chicken, small amounts chopped up small when they had diarrhoea and it stopped within a few days.

Had this with my BSH at about 6 months.

Antibiotics, the panacur stuff and feeding him only rice and chicken (which was a PITA to prepare) - only stopped when I put him on Royal Canin Sensitive.

After he settled down slowly re-introduced other food and hes not had any further issues.

We used to have a pedigree cat that had persistent diarrhoea. She was lactose intolerant and removing milk/dairy from her diet cleared it up. She was a sod for helping herself if anyone left butter or an unfinished cereal bowl on the side though, so had the odd bout after.
