Would it be right to get a new cat/kitten

We have a 4 yr old cat. It took a long time to convince DH to allow us to have a pet and a cat was mostly his choice as low maintenance and I don't like caged animals.

We've had our 4 year okd cat since she was c.1 yr old. She was from CPL and had just had kittens. She is aloof. It took 2 years for her to sit on my lap and then only very very sporadically. She doesn't like to be picked up at all. To be honest I think she tolerates us in order to be fed. Even the lady at the holiday cattery said she was especially food driven.

Meanwhile my friends' cats seem especially attentive towards them. So not our experience.

She doesn't like other cats although we do have a monster Maine Coon that keeps taking lumps out of her so I don't blame her.

The DCs have unbelievably convinced DH to consider a second cat. I'm really not sure that Cat 1 would accept a newcomer and I don't want to upset her, or new cat. So, would this be unwise?
Also, would we be likely to have another grumpy cat?

Cat 1 did settle in very easily. No toiletting issues and just got on with living with us.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

I should point out that the Maine Coon isnt ours - poorly written on my part. The Maine Coon is a local cat that keeps turning up in our garden.
