Stage two kidney disease

My DP and I adopted two of my sister in laws cats six months ago, Merry and Pippin. They are both sixteen and lovely cats, we love them very much. We found out in November that Pippin has stage one kidney disease.

After a trip to the vets today, We found out that Merry has stage two kidney disease.

Merry needs to go onto a full renal diet and we are going back to the vets tomorrow to discuss food for her.

I’m heart broken about it can any one share any positive stories of their cats coping with kidney disease?

No experience of kidney disease myself but it is common so bumping for you.
One piece of advice though. Our (now departed) Vinocat had ongoing health issues and I found having a good relationship with our vet helped so much. She was always willing to help and give me advice; I would keep her up to date on how Vinocat was and did blood glucose curves at home (she was diabetic). Think of it as a teamwork.

Thank you. Our vet is fantastic and Imwas able to talk toner today and she gave me loads of good advice. We started Merry on the renal diet today and she was pretty happy with food, which was a relief! From what I understand getting cats to eat the food can be tough.

We will be going back to the vets in a months time, so hopefully her results will be back down to normal by then. Fingers crossed!

My ginger tom has kidney disease and is now on renal diet. He really likes the Royal Canin Renal food. I order it in bulk from pets at home so it works out much cheaper. He now has some protein in his urine so will also have to go onto tablets and has vitamin paste which has B12 in it.

Harry wouldn’t touch the renal food and the vet agreed it was more important that he ate. We ended up adding Ipakitine to his normal food (apparently Pronefra is better but he didn’t like it) and his kidney readings were back to normal last week. I’m glad Merry likes the food, Harry is too fussy for his own good!

Ours use to have the Pronefra (before renal diet) in liquid form which I use a syrenge into his mouth...mind he didnt like that much either

We didn’t even try that as he’s got an unstable jaw after it was fractured a couple of years ago. He’s also lost a lot of teeth and on the one occasion we did try syringing something it went in one side and out though the gap the other side and all down me!

The joys of medicating cats. Mine also has gapy teeth and loved to shake his head to get me covered in the stuff or he would go and throw it up.

@expat - we have a mixture of Hills Prescription and Royal Canin food range for for her to try. Once we know what she likes I will definitely look at ordering it online. Yes, the joys of medicating cats. It would be great if we could explain to them why they need to have it!

@ PinkSparklyPussyCat, I am so glad that Harry's reading were back into the normal range.

I am so glad I took her to the vets because now we know. She was drinking a lot of extra water and seemed a bit off. I thought it could be the heat, as it is summer in Australia but took her in anyway.
