Cat giving off awful clear scent/secretion - help

I've not posted on this thread before but hoping someone with experience with cats can please help.

My cat (male neutered 2 years old) has started giving off a secretion/clear spray from his anal area, which is often when he is 'padding' next to/whilst on me or DD. It leaves the most awful scent which means any clothing/blankets have to be removed/washed and DH banishes him into the conservatory as it's really unpleasant.

What on earth is it? Do we need to take him to the vets? We've not changed his food at all. For information he is a very anxious cat and isolating him isn't an ideal solution for him or us.

I have no idea but definitely take him to the vet.

I had a neutered male who sometimes "made a stink" and it there was usually a tiny bit of brown mucus. It was so long ago that I can't remember why he did it. He wasn't a particular nervous cat, not until I had a house rabbit but that's another story. It usually happened when he was snuggled up on a lap. Trousers would have to be washed immediately.

Could be his anal glands? Definitely get him checked by a vet x

Harry did this for a while, usually on me. We used to call it stinkies. When we mentioned it to the vet she said it’s something to do with the anal glands and he was marking me, so it was a sign that he loved me Confused

Thankfully he hasn’t done it for years now, it was vile. It did work in my favour once though when he did it over my coat. I’d been looking at a new coat for ages but couldn’t justify it. Obviously I couldn’t wear the one he’d marked so I had an excuse to buy the new one!

I would definitely get it checked out though.

TroysMammy sounds similar though not seen any mucus. Its more like a clear discharge (sorry tmi!) but similar to your 'experience', it seems its when he's relaxed.

I'll get in touch with the vets. We've had other male cats in the past but this is our first experience of this.

Yes, my previous cat used to do this. I'm not sure I can remember how (as in whether by a vet or by Google), but I was reassured it was a natural, if unpleasant, function. A kind of scent marking. It is grim, isn't it? It used to make me wary of letting her get too euphoric on my lap Grin

Reassuring to hear I'm not alone. Yes it is a rather grim possible side effect of affection. I'll certainly seek vets advice to rule anything else out though. Thanks all.
