Are oil diffusers harmful to cats?

I received some essential oils for Christmas and am thinking about buying a diffuser but saw something online about them potentially being harmful to cats. Is this true?

I think a lot can be toxic if actually consumed, but that applies to people as well.
If you burn them and keep the diffuser away from kicking tongues, it shouldn't be a problem.
